The A's carved out room on their 40-man roster this spring to keep 27-year-old Jake Fox, who was out of options, designating him as backup catcher, righty-hitting DH and occasional player at third base and in left field. But the experiment ended badly when Fox batted just .214/.264/.327 in 98 at-bats, prompting Oakland to designate him for assignment in hopes of finding a trade partner. Baltimore stepped in and took a worthwhile gamble in exchanging Ross Wolf, a Triple-A reliever with fringy stuff and peripherals, for Fox, who could develop into a cheap power source.

As they did with Jake Fox, the A's made room on their roster this spring for the out-of-options Eric Patterson. But with the impending return of Coco Crisp, not to mention Patterson's .204/.255/.408 line in 103 at-bats, Oakland decided to cut bait and designate the left fielder for assignment. The Red Sox offered up 21-year-old lefty Fabian Williamson, whom they had acquired from the Mariners in a similar DFA trade involving David Aardsma. Williamson is your standard-fare, three-pitch lefty who sits in the mid- to high 80s and keeps batters off balance with his curveball. His strikeout rate slipped from 8.7 per nine innings in low Class A last year to 5.5 with high Class A Salem this season.

Red Sox pro scouting director Allard Baird signed Jay Broughton away from the Golden League, where the Ball State product went 2-2, 4.01 with 23 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings. Interestingly enough, former Red Sox's indy find Morgan Burkhart served as Broughton's manager with Calgary.

Continuing the theme of DFA trades, the Cubs acquired Brian Schlitter from the Phillies in August ’08 when they unloaded Scott Eyre. Schlitter, 24, ran up a solid 31-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 33 innings for Triple-A Iowa. In fact, the Cubs have leaned hard on the Iowa bullpen this season, making use of Justin Berg, Andrew Cashner, Jeff Gray, James Russell and Jeff Stevens in addition to Schlitter.

Jacob Turner, the high school first-rounder last year who signed a big league deal, made quick work of low Class A, going 2-3, 3.67 in 11 games for West Michigan. He struck out 51 and walked nine in 54 innings. Andy Oliver, the club's second-round pick, put the entire minor leagues behind him, going 6-4, 3.61 in 14 starts for Double-A Erie, while notching 70 strikeouts in 77 innings.

JC, had vaulted to high Class A Rancho Cucamonga, going 10-2, 3.86 with a 3.6-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 15 starts. He attended Mohawk Valley CC in Utica, N.Y., before transferring to Chipola.

Jesus Colome and Jack Taschner join the growing list of recently discarded pitchers who have signed on to pitch at Triple-A Albuquerque, a list that includes Luis Ayala, Kiko Calero and Claudio Vargas. The Isotopes have used an astounding 35 pitchers so far this season, though that includes rehab stints by Vicente Padilla and George Sherrill as well as position players like Timo Perez and Ramon Nivar getting into the act.

Not to belittle Yung Chi Chen, who ranked as the Mariners' No. 9 prospect in ’07 and is a veteran of the ’06 World Baseball Classic, but the headline writer for Focus Taiwan is probably alone in his estimation of Chen as a "slugger." His career high for home runs in a season is eight, while he's slugged .374 and .337 in Double-A and Triple-A.

Another former Mariner, Justin Thomas paced all Triple-A International League relievers with 0.78 walks per nine innings for Indianapolis. His .157 opponent average ranked second. The Pirates claimed him on waivers last October.
