ANAHEIM—I had a chance to talk quickly to World coach Charlie Montoyo, the Triple-A Durham manager who threw some of the World team's BP, while BA's SoCal birddog, Dave Perkin, also took it in.

Both were impressed with Yonder Alonso's batting practice, and Alonso lost some balls to dead center with impressive power. He dropped his back shoulder a bit but was squaring balls up with ease.

Carlos Peguero of the Mariners, who has as much raw pop as anyone in the minors, also impressed with his power display. Perkin said Peguero's approach, from what he saw in BP, does leave him vulnerable to pitches on the outside corner, and that's been evident in Peguero's career in terms of strikeouts.

Indians farmhand Chun Chen, a catcher, intrigued Perkin by displaying loft power but also by fidgeting with his setup and stride, using a different stride with each turn in the BP cage. Perkin also liked what he saw out of Marlins infielder Ozzie Martinez, whose setup in the box and swing evoke Orlando Cabrera. Martinez lived up to his reputation with some flash while fielding grounders after his BP session was done.

• Montoyo said there's a chance Jeremy Hellickson could log two innings for the U.S. team, though U.S. coach Mike Sarbaugh still wasn't sure. Hellickson hasn't pitched since July 5, and Montoy said he'd be the fifth starter when the Bulls come back after the all-star break.

• Mike Trout of the Angels isn't in the starting lineup and is about to take BP. He's headed to high Class A Rancho Cucamonga, a short drive from here, after the game, a promotion from low Class A Cedar Rapids.

• USA Baseball will be eying Trout and other non-40-man roster prospects. USA Baseball will put together a team of pros for an October tournament that functions as a qualifier for the Pan American Games in 2011.
