The Cubs kicked off their international signing period by agreeing to terms with 16-year-old Dominican shortstop Daniel Sanchez for what is believed to be a mid six-figure bonus, according to an international source.
Sanchez, who is from Bani, is a righthanded hitter with a projectable 6-foot-2, 170-pound frame with above-average raw power. He's an average runner with a solid-average arm.

Posted by Lulu | July 2, 2010 at 1:17 pm | ShortcutYOU GOTTA WONDER WHAT MIGHT BE BEHIND THIS MANEUVER, IF YOU'RE A LONG TIME SUFFERING CUB FAN, SINCE CASTRO ALREADY APPEARS TO BE THEIR SHORTSTOP FOR ABOUT 20+ YEARS TO COME ??? AND NOTHING IN THIS STORY INDICATED HOW WELL THE KID COULD HIT AND FIELD, ALTHOUGH YOU WOULD THINK HE'S SOMEWHAT OF A WHIZ, GIVEN THE SIGNING $$$$$ AMOUNT.

Posted by Navin | July 2, 2010 at 3:21 pm | ShortcutTom, you don't sign a 16yo international kid because you want him be on your ML club any time soon. Also, as Branch Rickey put it, quality comes in quanity. Scouting departments bring in as many kids as they can, just to find a select few to make the Majors.
