Cubs Sign Dominican SS Sanchez

The Cubs kicked off their international signing period by agreeing to terms with 16-year-old Dominican shortstop Daniel Sanchez for what is believed to be a mid six-figure bonus, according to an international source.

Sanchez, who is from Bani, is a righthanded hitter with a projectable 6-foot-2, 170-pound frame with above-average raw power. He's an average runner with a solid-average arm.

WE BELIEVE . . . the children are our future.  :-)

YOU GOTTA WONDER WHAT MIGHT BE BEHIND THIS MANEUVER, IF YOU'RE A LONG TIME SUFFERING CUB FAN, SINCE CASTRO ALREADY APPEARS TO BE THEIR SHORTSTOP FOR ABOUT 20+ YEARS TO COME ???   AND NOTHING IN THIS STORY INDICATED HOW WELL THE KID COULD HIT AND FIELD, ALTHOUGH YOU WOULD THINK HE'S SOMEWHAT OF A WHIZ, GIVEN THE SIGNING $$$$$ AMOUNT.

I somehow feel that the person behind the comments above is new to International Signing period following.

And new to the Caps Lock key.

Tom, you don't sign a 16yo international kid because you want him be on your ML club any time soon. Also, as Branch Rickey put it, quality comes in quanity. Scouting departments bring in as many kids as they can, just to find a select few to make the Majors.
