The Rowland brothers will reunite as teammates this summer for the first time since their days at Cloverdale (Calif.) High three years ago. Arizona drafted (and signed) Robby in the third round this year, taking the righthander out of high school. Now, Richie, a catcher, joins the fold after signing as a nondrafted college senior from Campbellsville (Ky.) University. The D-backs assigned both members of the Rowlands battery to Rookie-level Missoula.

The Braves opted to reward Chris Resop with a 40-man roster spot rather than lose him to an opt-out clause, which he could have exercised on June 15. For full details on Resop’s development, both here and abroad, please see our recent Prospect Bulletin. With Triple-A Gwinnett, he went 5-2, 1.84 in 13 starts, while recording 81 whiffs and 27 walks in 73 innings. The 27-year-old Resop had made just six career starts entering the season.

We're still tracking down specifics on 24-year-old outfielder Marcus Dwayne Jones, who signed on June 21 and was assigned to the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. According to MLB Advanced Media's data, Jones stands 6-foot-4, weighs 220 pounds, bats left and throws right.
Update: The Marcus Jones in question is the former Duke student athlete who, according to his football bio page, received a degree in biological anthropology and anatomy from the university in May 2009. A four-year letterwinner in football, Jones started at quarterback, wide receiver and finally linebacker. He appeared in 17 games for the ’09 Blue Devils squad, and the Orioles signed him out of a tryout camp. Here's Jones taking a few BP cuts on YouTube.

Reinstated from DL: RHP Leroy Hunt, OF Alejandro De Aza
Prior to his callup, Viciedo batted .290/.329/.525 with 14 home runs in 238 at-bats for Triple-A Charlotte. However, those numbers are a tad misleading, in light of Charlotte's cozy home dimensions. Viciedo hit 10 of his 14 bombs at home, while slugging nearly 200 points higher, .628 to .432.

Nearly 14 months ago, Jeff Sr. perished after being struck by a line drive while he threw batting practice at Lynchburg (Va.) College. Despite the tragic events, Jeff Jr. had an outstanding senior season, batting .371 with 39 stolen bases in 41 attempts.

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Sean Finefrock, RHP Melvin Mercedes, LHP Hua-Wei Lo, C Adolfo Reina, OF Luis Castillo
Reinstated from DL: C John Murrian
Lost among the sea of nondrafted free agents is Jon Weber, a minor league veteran who latched on with the Tigers after being dumped by the Yankees. He played in the Rays system last year, where he helped Durham to the Triple-A National Championship. Weber began his Mud Hens career with a 7-for-31 start (.226) with one home runs in eight games.

Reinstated from DL: OF Kevin Mattison, OF Marcell Ozuna
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Kris Harvey
Adam Kam offers a lesson on how not to make a positive impression as a recent draft pick. A 50th-round selection last year, he signed in mid-August, in time to appear in only one Gulf Coast League game. Then in January he failed a test for a performance-enhancing substance and was handed a 50-game suspension.
According to our records, 22-year-old righthander Kevin Michael Cravey pitched for Texas A&M in ’08, but we can find no amateur or pro record for either ’09 or ’10. The Marlins assigned him to the GCL following his signing on June 17.
Update: The Marlins signed Kevin Cravey out of a Scouting Bureau tryout camp in Oklahoma. He pitched for Texas A&M in 2008 but then had elbow surgery for a bone spur. He decided to just work on his mechanical engineering degree and didn't pitch in ’09 or ’10.

Placed on 60-day DL: 3B Erik Castro

Kenny Diaz, a 49th-round pick from Puerto Rico, is that rare draftee who begins his career in the Dominican Summer League.
Kansas City Royals
Signed: LHP Zach Brown
Draft picks signed: RHP Matt Ridings (41), C Alexander Marquez (29)
Placed on restricted list: OF Santos Cabrera
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Anthony Lerew

Reinstated from inactive list: LHP Adam Bostick
The Padres selected Zach Brown from The Citadel in the 27th round of the ’07 draft. But after the outfielder batted just .224 in his first 312 at-bats, San Diego converted him to the mound with low Class A Fort Wayne in ’08. Brown made just three appearances that season before being released the following spring training.

Placed on 60-day DL: RHP Brian Wilson, LHP Starlin Feliz
Reinstated from DL: RHP Tim Schoeninger
The Angels selected Washington product Jake Locker in the 10th round of the ’09 draft, but he has not yet played for the organization. He'll head back to school this fall to quarterback the Huskies for one final season. Los Angeles controls Locker's baseball rights for six years, so that's why they placed him on the restricted list. Here's a recent football feature about Locker.
Ryan Woods signed as a nondrafted free agent last winter, but the Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) product did not pitch for the organization.

A reader pointed out that Matt Wright had signed on to play for the Kia Tigers of Korea Baseball Organization this season. It appears that a hamstring injury put the kibosh on that, however. Wright rejoins the A's, with whom he had signed last November, before the KBO came calling.

Much like the situation with the Angels and Jake Locker, the Rangers control football wide receiver Riley Cooper's baseball rights, should he decide to walk away from an NFL career. That's why Texas must go through the formality of placing him on the restricted list—even though all signs point to Cooper signing to play for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles, the club that made him a fifth-round pick in April's draft.

A week after trading Jorge Padilla to the Mets, the Blue Jays received Double-A righthander Clint Everts as the player to be named. New York had signed Everts to a big league deal last December, but when they removed him from the 40-man roster they sent him all the way down to Binghamton, where he ran up a 6.94 ERA over 26 relief appearances.
Matt Johnson becomes just the second College of Wooster product, since 1990, to ink a pro contract.
Remarkably for a player who just wrapped up a junior-college career, lefty Michael Kelly previously was drafted five years ago. The White Sox selected Kelly out of his Mayo, Fla., high school in the 42nd round of the ’05 draft.

If you have any more information on the Orioles' Marcus Jones or the Marlins' Kevin Cravey, please leave a message in comments or drop me an e-mail.
Posted by Matt Eddy | June 28, 2010 at 5:51 pm | ShortcutWhat exactly is the minor league 60-day DL? Is there an actual limit to the number of healthy players an organization can have under contract, or is it just a paper/procedural move that really only makes sense to the person who created it?
Posted by jason | June 28, 2010 at 6:28 pm | ShortcutMatt Wright (OAK) pitched for the KIA Tigers in Korea earlier this season.
Posted by dave | June 28, 2010 at 8:30 pm | ShortcutMarcus Jones is the former Duke linebacker who also played a year of baseball.
Any idea why Luis Ramirez, the SS the Braves recently signed out of El Salvador, is on the restricted list?
Update: The Marcus Jones in question is the former Duke student athlete who, according to his football bio page, received a degree in biological anthropology and anatomy from the university in May 2009. A four-year letterwinner in football, Jones started at quarterback, wide receiver and finally linebacker. He appeared in 17 games for the ’09 Blue Devils squad, and the Orioles signed him out of a tryout camp. Here's Jones taking a few BP cuts on YouTube.
Posted by Matt Eddy | June 29, 2010 at 8:25 am | ShortcutIs it the same Kevin Cravey from Texas A&M? He pitched for them in 2008 anyway…
Posted by JP | June 29, 2010 at 2:35 pm | ShortcutDoes any body know what happened to Jason Knapp? He had surgery this winter and was supposed to be 100% by spring training. Yet he hasn't pitched this year yet and doesn't seem to be on any team roster at the moment.
Posted by BK | June 30, 2010 at 12:19 am | ShortcutUpdate: The Marlins signed Kevin Cravey out of a Scouting Bureau tryout camp in Oklahoma. He pitched for Texas A&M in 2008 but then had elbow surgery for a bone spur. He decided to just work on his mechanical engineering degree and didn't pitch in ’09 or ’10.
Posted by Matt Eddy | June 30, 2010 at 1:52 pm | ShortcutHave you heard anything about Dodger prospect Danny Danielson either quitting baseball or getting released? I heard this rumor for the first time today but haven't been able to confirm it
Posted by Brandon | July 1, 2010 at 4:51 pm | ShortcutAs to the minor league 60-day DL, it functions in a similar manner to the major league version. At the MLB level, placing an injured player on the 60-day DL frees up a 40-man roster space for the club to use during injured player's absence.
Similarly, minor league teams are bound to in-season guidelines. They can carry only a certain number of active, 7-day DL and temporarily inactive players on any one minor league roster. This is where the 60-day comes into play.
For many of baseball's rules, they try to maintain consistency at both the major and minor league levels.
Interesting question, by the way. I hadn’t given much thought to the minor league 60-day DL before.
