Minor League Transactions

This time: June 8-14

Many thanks to John Manuel and Jim Callis for pinch-hitting with transactions last week. John tracked down the draft pick signings, while Jim concentrated on finding schools for nondrafted college free agents. It's a lot of work, and they did an excellent job. Or as Aaron Fitt would say: Great job, boss!

At any rate, draft signing season has begun. I decided to fold in the draft and NDFA info from the John & Jim report in order to preserve Minor League Transactions blog continuity.

The numbers in parentheses denote draft round, of course, and I encourage one and all to check out our Draft Database. It's the easiest place on the Web to find out, 1) who drafted whom, and from which school and which state, and 2) which players have signed. That's all free. Subscribers can visit the Advanced Draft Database, which has scouting reports and bonus information for all the top picks. The ADD also lets the reader sort by school, state and position.

Recalled: SS Brandon Hicks
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Chris Masters, LHP Brett Oberholtzer, 3B Eric Duncan
Reinstated from DL: RHP Ty'Relle Harris, LHP Steven Kent, OF Willie Cabrera

Second-rounder Todd Cunningham signed quickly but was stuck in limbo for 10 days while waiting for MLB to approve his contract with the Braves, a deal that included a $674,100 bonus. The former Jacksonville State standout won the Cape Cod League batting title last year and went 1-for-3 in his pro debut with low Class A Rome on Sunday.

Baltimore Orioles
Signed
: RHP Andy Deain (NDFA—Northen Illinois), RHP D.J. Ferguson (NDFA—Carson-Newman (Tenn.)), RHP D.D. Hanks (NDFA—South Alabama), LHP Chris Petrini (NDFA—California)
Draft picks signed: RHP Steven Mazur (33), LHP Jacob Petitt (42), 3B Michael Mosby (14), SS Brad Decater (36), SS Vinny Zazueta (25), OF Preston Hale (44), OF David Richardson (17), OF Jeremy Shelby (38), OF Cody Young (47)
Released: RHP Jake Renshaw, LHP Tony Butler, LHP Jake Smith
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Jake Arrieta
Removed from 40-man: LHP Alberto Castillo (Triple-A)
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Brad Bergesen
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Kam Mickolio, 3B Matt Tucker
Reinstated from DL: RHP Josh Perrault, RHP Jake Renshaw

One of seven organizations to field seven domestic minor league clubs, the Orioles typically remain busy after the draft signing college seniors who went undrafted. Baltimore has three short-season rosters to stock, after all. Here, the O’s added four nondrafted free agents; last year, they signed six NDFAs immediately after the draft.

Boston Red Sox
Recalled
: RHP Scott Atchison, LHP Dustin Richardson
Added to 40-man roster: OF Daniel Nava
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Josh Reddick
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Yeiper Castillo, LHP Felix Doubront, LHP Armando Zerpa, OF Ryan Kalish
Reinstated from DL: RHP Kyle Weiland, OF Shannon Wilkerson

Following the 2007 season, J.J. Cooper identified Daniel Nava as the top prospect in the independent leagues. Undrafted that year out of Santa Clara, Nava signed with the Golden League’s Chico Outlaws and promptly won the batting title, hitting .371 and catching the interest of the Red Sox, who signed him in January ’08. Boston stationed Nava with high Class A Lancaster for all of that season, but once he reached Double-A in the second half of the ’09 season, Nava needed less than a year to crack the big leagues. In 200 minor league games, the 27-year-old switch-hitter batted .332/.420/.518.

Granted, a slew of injuries paved the way for Nava. For perspective: Among Boston outfielders, only J.D. Drew has accumulated more plate appearances this season than has Darnell McDonald, who was signed to a minor league deal to provide depth at Triple-A. The Red Sox also turned to Josh Reddick and Jonathan Van Every this season before calling up Nava. In other words, Nava probably would have been, at best, a September callup had the stars not aligned. But here he is, 10-for-his-first-27 (.370) in the big leagues, with a homer and five doubles.

Chicago Cubs
Signed
: 2B Doug Cherry (NDFA—Washington), OF Anthony Giansanti (NDFA—Siena)
Draft picks signed: RHP Dustin Fitzgerald (19), RHP Aaron Kurcz (10), RHP Matt Loosen (23), RHP Colin Richardson (14), RHP Joe Zeller (28), LHP Hunter Ackerman (4), LHP Brent Ebinger (32), LHP Cam Greathouse (8), C Jeff Vigurs (22), 1B Ryan Cuneo (20), 3B Dustin Harrington (34)
Recalled: RHP Mitch Atkins, 1B Chad Tracy
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP James Russell
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Dustin Sasser
Reinstated from DL: LHP Ryan Buchter, C Mark Johnson

Chicago White Sox
Draft picks signed
: RHP Austin Evans (23), RHP Jamaal Hollis (33), RHP Ethan Icard (13), RHP Thomas Royse (3.5), C Michael Blanke (14), 1B Mike Schwartz (17), 3B Rangel Ravelo (6), SS Drew Lee (12), SS Ethan Wilson (25), OF Michael Earley (29), OF John Spatola (35)
Released: SS Matt Harughty, SS Jesus Villegas
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Nevin Griffith, RHP Leroy Hunt, RHP Charlie Shirek, LHP Andrew Dobies
Reinstated from DL: RHP Ricky Brooks, LHP Zach Piccola, C Adam Ricks

Cincinnati Reds
Draft picks signed
: RHP Tony Amezcua (7), RHP Pat Doyle (24), RHP El'Hajj Muhammad (49), RHP Daniel Wolford (14), LHP Stephen Hunt (15), LHP Matt Leonard (38), LHP Tanner Robles (9), C Chris Berset (20), C Will Harford (45), 1B Dominic D'Anna (31), 1B Jonathan Kaskow (41), 2B Brodie Greene (4), 3B Adam Muenster (29), 3B David Vidal (8), SS Devin Lohman (3), OF Ryan LaMarre (2), OF Robert Maddox (18), OF Kurtis Muller (22)
Released: C Jacob Long
Placed on restricted list: LHP Alexander Smit, OF Justin Reed
Option transferred: LHP Bill Bray (high Class A to Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Derrik Lutz, OF Andrew Means
Reinstated from DL: 3B Juan Francisco
Placed on temporarily inactive list: C Kevin Coddington

Smit announced his intention to retire and return to the Netherlands, thus the Reds placed him on the restricted list. While still a strong strikeout pitcher who has averaged 8.1 whiffs per nine innings this season, Smit went just 1-5, 9.14 in nine starts for Double-A Carolina. His walk rate crept up to six per nine this season, which coupled with righties hitting a robust .324/.445/.547 against him, led to his downfall. Smit has charted slow progress in his eight pro seasons, not reaching Double-A to stay until ’09, when he was 23 years old.

Reed, a Reds’ fourth-round selection in ’06, received a 50-game suspension for failing his second test for a drug of abuse.

Cleveland Indians
Signed
: RHP Alex Kaminsky (NDFA—Wright State)
Draft picks signed: RHP Jordan Cooper (9), C Diego Seastrunk (14), 1B Chase Burnette (18), 2B Aaron Fields (42), OF Brian Heere (41)
Recalled: C Carlos Santana
Added to 40-man roster: 2B Anderson Hernandez
Optioned to Triple-A: C Lou Marson
Option transferred: RHP Shane Lindsay (high Class A to Double-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: 1B Beau Mills
Reinstated from DL: RHP Carlton Smith

Carlos Santana homered in his final game for Triple-A Columbus, where he finished at .316/.447/.597 with 13 homers, 14 doubles and a 45-to-39 walk-to-strikeout ratio in 196 at-bats. Don’t expect to see him in the International League again for anything other than a rehab assignment.

Colorado Rockies
Draft picks signed
: RHP Christian Bergman (24), RHP Chad Bettis (2), RHP Bruce Kern (23), RHP Josh Mueller (13), RHP Juan Perez (18), RHP John Reid (14), LHP Blake Keitzman (27), LHP Kenny Roberts (25), C Ryan Casteel (17), 1B Jordan Ballard (33), 1B Blake McDade (20), 1B Mark Tracy (22), 2B Brett Tanos (10), 3B Jayson Langfels (16), OF McKenzie Dickerson (8), OF Jared Simon (6)
Optioned to Double-A: RHP Greg Reynolds
Placed on 7-day DL: 2B Maikol Gonzalez
Reinstated from DL: LHP Greg Smith, 1B Kiel Roling, SS Radames Nazario, OF Mike Mitchell
Placed on temporarily inactive list: LHP Kurt Birkins, OF Chris Frey, OF Cole Garner
Reinstated from inactive list: OF Chris Frey, OF Cole Garner

The No. 2 overall pick in the ’06 draft, Greg Reynolds has battled a series of shoulder and elbow injuries that limited him to only one game last season and to six so far this year. In three June starts for Double-A Tulsa, totaling 7 2/3 innings, he’s allowed nine runs on 12 hits, good for a 10.57 ERA. That number may stabilize as he recovers arm strength because his strikeout-to-walk ratio stands at 6-to-1.

Detroit Tigers
Signed
: OF Ben Johnson (Orange County (Golden))
Draft picks signed: LHP Kyle Ryan (12), LHP Shawn Teufel (25), C Tyson Kendrick (49), 2B Josh Ashenbrenner (18), 3B Pete Miller (40), 3B Matt Perry (41), SS Ryan Soares (36)
Released: 2B Luis Palacios, OF Josh Workman
Voluntarily retired: RHP Nolan Cain
Recalled: 2B Danny Worth
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Enrique Gonzalez
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Brayan Villarreal, 1B Cesar Nicolas
Reinstated from DL: RHP Nolan Cain

The Mets viewed Ben Johnson as the perfect complement to their lefty-leaning outfield when they traded for him following the ’06 season. The cost, Heath Bell, proved more than a little exorbitant. Johnson appeared in 62 games for the organization in ’07, but injuries waylaid him after that and he never was heard from again. He latched on with the independent Golden League’s Orange County franchise last August, but it was his exploits this spring (he batted .405/.550/.714 with four home runs in 12 games) that caught the Tigers’ attention.

Florida Marlins
Signed
: RHP Tom Mastny (Somerset (Atlantic)), RHP Scott Rembisz (NDFA—Florida International), LHP John Lambert (NDFA—North Carolina State)
Draft picks signed: RHP Alan Oaks (8), RHP Jared Rogers (36), RHP Chris Squires (37), LHP Forrest Moore (38), LHP Zach Robertson (30), LHP Ken Toves (21), C Gregg Glime (24), 2B Dallas Poulk (19), SS Alfredo Lopez (20), SS Todd Muecklisch (26), OF Kentrell Dewitt (13), OF Ryan Fisher (15)
Recalled: RHP Rick VandenHurk
Added to 40-man roster: OF Mike Stanton
Removed from 40-man: 3B Mike Lamb (Triple-A)
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Rick VandenHurk
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Chad Cregar, OF Kevin Mattison, OF John Raynor
Reinstated from DL: OF John Raynor

Houston Astros
Signed
: RHP Brad Thompson, SS Jonathan Merritt (NDFA—Alabama-Birmingham), OF Lee Cruz (Yuma (Golden))
Draft picks signed: RHP Jake Buchanan (8), RHP Ryan Cole (34), RHP Jamaine Cotton (15), RHP Bobby Doran (4), RHP Michael Ness (33), RHP Andrew Robinson (12), RHP Brian Streilein (37), LHP Adam Champion (24), LHP Jeremiah Meiners (40), LHP Tommy Shirley (9), LHP Alex Sogard (25), C Ben Heath (5), C Roberto Pena (7), C Chris Wallace (16), 3B Tyler Burnett (17), 3B Mike Kvasnicka (1.5), 3B Kyle Redinger (11), SS Jacke Healey (27), OF Daniel Adamson (20), OF Adam Bailey (23), OF Bryce Lane (41), OF Josh Magee (18), OF Jordan Scott (14)
Released: SS Ricardo Bonfante, OF Josh Flores
Placed on 7-day DL: 1B Chris Shelton, SS Edwin Maysonet
Reinstated from DL: 2B Drew Meyer

University of Houston catcher Chris Wallace, a 16th-round draft pick, signed quickly with his hometown club, but he has yet to appear in a game. The Rookie-level Greeneville Astros begin play today with the first game of the Appalachian League season. Fifth-rounder Ben Heath handles the catching for short-season Tri-City of the New York-Penn League.

Kansas City Royals
Signed
: RHP Tyler Gatrell (NDFA—Marshall), RHP Justin Mazur (NDFA—Wayne State (Mich.)), RHP Nick Rogers (NDFA—North Carolina A&T), LHP Kyle Kriech (NDFA—Jacksonville), LHP Brennon Martin (NDFA—Memphis), LHP Jordan Roualdes (NDFA—Nebraska), C Seth Furmanek (NDFA—Oral Roberts), 2B Correy Figueroa (NDFA—Tampa)
Draft picks signed: RHP Chad Blauer (30), RHP Charles Byrne (16), RHP Eric Cantrell (7), RHP Jonathan Dooley (26), RHP Mike Giovenco (14), RHP Nick Graffeo (38), RHP Tyler Graham (22), RHP Daniel Hernandez (12), RHP Cole Lohden (33), RHP Michael Mariot (8), RHP Jason Mitchell (15), RHP Robbie Penny (37), RHP Alex Rivers (39), LHP Scott Alexander (6), C Dale Cornstubble (40), C Kevin David (19), C Ryan Jenkins (17), C Drew Robertson (46), 1B Murray Watts (28), SS Michael Liberto (21), SS Alex McClure (11), SS Tom Zebroski (45), OF Cameron Conner (20), OF Tim Ferguson (10), OF Jose Rodriguez (27), OF Darian Sandford (47)
Released: RHP Mike Lehmann, 3B Jason Taylor, OF Chanse Cooper
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Mike Montgomery
Reinstated from DL: LHP Mike Montgomery, OF Nick Van Stratten

The Royals forked over $762,500 to sign Jason Taylor as a second-round pick in ’06, only to release him four years later after a thoroughly underwhelming minor league career. His bat was supposed to be his meal ticket, but Taylor hit just .245/.352/.386 in 917 at-bats, distributed mostly among rookie ball and low Class A stops. He hit rock bottom with high Class A Wilmington this year, hitting .173/.218/.282 in 110 at-bats and drawing his release. But Taylor’s batting line tells only half the story. He missed the entire ’07 season while under suspension for an off-field issue. Then he garnered a “drug of abuse” suspension in ’09 that forced him to sit out of 50 games.

The Pittsfield Colonials of the independent Can-Am League signed Taylor after his release from the Royals.

Like the Orioles above, the Royals typically acquire a handful of college NDFAs right after the draft because they have to fill rosters for three short-season affiliates. Here, they’ve signed eight such players, whereas last year Kansas City signed just five NDFAs, by my unofficial count, in the month following the draft.

Cut by the Red Sox in spring training, Scott Patterson resumed his independent league career where he left off in ’05—with Lancaster of the Atlantic League. Five years ago, he caught the Yankees’ attention with a dominating turn as closer (23 innings, 13 hits, 31 strikeouts) for the Barnstormers. This time, the Mariners took note of his 18-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 16 relief innings.

Alexi Ogando made short work of the minors this season after finally being allowed to pitch in the U.S. Denied a work visa for his part in a human trafficking ring, he had been exiled to his native Dominican Republic for the past five seasons, where he participated in the DSL and in that nation’s winter league. In 18 games for Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, the 26-year-old Ogando registered 12.3 strikeouts and 3.2 walks per nine innings. He allowed only one home run in 31 innings.

Correy Figueroa, the second baseman signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Royals, is the twin brother of Padres prospect Cole Figueroa. Their father Bien played for the ’92 Cardinals and served as a long-time minor league coach.

Both Cole and Correy are 5-foot-10, lefty-hitting second basemen. The Blue Jays drafted both of them—Cole in the ninth round and Correy in the 42nd—out of Tallahassee's Lincoln High in ’06 but signed neither.

Cole ultimately signed as a Padres sixth-rounder in ’08 out of Florida. The Giants selected Correy in the 41st round of that same draft, out of St. Petersburg JC, but did not sign him. He played for Division II Tampa in 2009-10, going undrafted each year.
