Minor League Transactions

This time: June 2-7

Check out the Transactions Glossary for the key to deciphering the various inactive lists presented here.

An asterisk (*) denotes an instance of a player agreeing to terms on a minor league contract with an organization with which he already had a major league agreement.

Boston Red Sox

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Kyle Weiland, RHP Alex Wilson, SS Jose Iglesias, OF David Mailman
Reinstated from DL: RHP Randor Bierd, RHP Stephen Fife, RHP Ryan Pressly, C Michael Thomas

In his time with Triple-A Pawtucket, between stints in the big leagues, Reddick batted just .195/.252/.362, going 29-for-149 with 12 walks and 33 strikeouts. Thirteen of those hits went for extra bases, however, and the Red Sox plan to deploy Reddick mostly as a caddy for Mike Cameron.

Iglesias and Weiland landed on the Double-A Portland DL with, respectively, a bruised hand suffered after being hit by a pitch and a bruised finger on his left hand. Wilson will miss time with an ankle bruise.

Chicago Cubs
Placed on 7-day DL:
C Mark Johnson
Reinstated from DL: C Robinson Chirinos

Chicago White Sox
Signed:
3B Fernando Cortez (Newark (Atlantic))
Released: 3B Jeff Hulett, SS Justin Fuller
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Zach Piccola, C Adam Ricks
Reinstated from DL: 2B Drew Garcia, OF Kenny Williams Jr.

If Justin Fuller's name sounds familiar, it's because the White Sox acquired him from the Dodgers last Aug. 31 for the final month of Jim Thome's contract.

Cincinnati Reds
Option transferred:
LHP Bill Bray (Triple-A to Double-A to high Class A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Doug Salinas
Reinstated from DL: LHP Bill Bray, 1B Chris Richburg

Bray returns from Tommy John surgery he had last May.

Cleveland Indians
Released:
1B Josh Phelps
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Frank Herrmann
Optioned to Triple-A: 1B Matt LaPorta
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Carlton Smith

If you squint, you might see the one run that Herrmann allowed for Triple-A Columbus in his 19 relief appearances. In 28 2/3 innings, he struck out 22, walked eight and allowed 15 hits. Congratulations are in order to the nondrafted free agent (Harvard, Aug. ’05) on making a successful big league debut. Herrmann, 26, is unscored upon in three outings, in which he's struck out three and allowed only one hit in 3 2/3 innings.

Who is your favorite college NDFA currently on a big league roster? It's an exclusive club. Off the top of my head, I can think only of the Rangers' Darren O'Day.

Colorado Rockies
Optioned to Triple-A:
RHP Esmil Rogers
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Greg Smith, 1B Kiel Roling, OF Kent Matthes, OF Brian Rike
Reinstated from DL: 1B Mike Zuanich, 2B Omar Quintanilla
Placed on temporarily inactive list: OF Chris Frey

Detroit Tigers
Optioned to Triple-A:
RHP Billy Buckner
Option transferred: OF Wilkin Ramirez (Double-A to Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: C Max St. Pierre
Reinstated from DL: 1B Jeff Larish, SS Brandon Douglas, OF Josh Workman

Detroit acquired Buckner in their trade of Dontrelle Willis, who had been designated for assignment, to the Diamondbacks.

Florida Marlins
Signed:
LHP Dan Meyer*, OF Jose Duarte (Pittsfield (Can-Am))
Released: RHP Benito Beato, LHP Brett Bukvich, OF Jason Lane, OF Austin Markel, OF Jeff Pruitt
Recalled: 2B Emilio Bonifacio
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Tim Wood, OF Brett Carroll
Option transferred: RHP Jose Ceda (Double-A to low Class A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Brad Stone, LHP Hunter Jones
Reinstated from DL: RHP Jose Ceda, 2B Emilio Bonifacio, OF John Raynor, OF Brandon Tripp
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Kris Harvey
Reinstated from inactive list: SS Gookie Dawkins

Prior to his two recent appearances for low Class A Greensboro, Ceda had last pitched in the minors for Double-A Tennessee on Aug. 25, 2008. Technically, he faced two batters with Escogido of the Dominican League in October ’08, walking them both and also throwing a wild pitch.

A lot changed in the year and a half between appearances. In November ’08, the Cubs traded Ceda to the Marlins to acquire Kevin Gregg, and while Gregg wasn't exactly nails as Chicago's closer, Ceda endured hardships of his own. He accidentally shot his best friend in the Dominican in ’08 and then missed the entire ’09 season after having shoulder surgery. If he's right, he can be a dominating relief presence.

Houston Astros
Acquired:
RHP Jailen Peguero from Rangers for future considerations
Outrighted to Triple-A, removed from 40-man: RHP Evan Englebrook
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Tanner Bushue, RHP Danny Meszaros, RHP Matt Nevarez
Reinstated from DL: RHP Brandt Walker, SS Edwin Maysonet

Kansas City Royals
Granted free agency:
RHP Brad Thompson
Outrighted to Triple-A, removed from 40-man: RHP Brad Thompson

Los Angeles Angels
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Ryan Aldridge
Reinstated from DL: RHP Rich Thompson

Los Angeles Dodgers
Released:
LHP John Koronka
Recalled: RHP Jon Link
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Travis Schlichting
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Javy Guerra, C Tony Delmonico, C Fumimasa Ishibashi
Reinstated from DL: RHP Jordan Pratt, C Fumimasa Ishibashi, 3B Russ Mitchell
Placed on temporarily inactive list: LHP Cole St. Clair
Reinstated from inactive list: LHP Cole St. Clair

Though not shown here, the Dodgers outrighted utility infielder Nick Green to Triple-A, after which he opted for free agency and ultimately re-signed with Los Angeles the next day.

Milwaukee Brewers
Signed:
RHP Brian Bruney, LHP Sam Narron (Camden (Atlantic)), C Dayton Buller (Camden (Atlantic))
Released: 1B Chris Errecart
Recalled: 3B Adam Heether
Optioned to Triple-A: 3B Mat Gamel
Option transferred: RHP Mark Rogers (Triple-A to Double-A) and C Angel Salome (Triple-A to Double-A to high Class A)
Outrighted to Triple-A, removed from 40-man: OF Adam Stern
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Alex Periard, C Michael Roberts, SS Ray Olmedo, OF Scott Krieger
Reinstated from DL: RHP Amaury Rivas, 3B Steffan Wilson, OF Brendan Katin

Correspondent Tom Haudricourt supplies the reason for Salome's tumble all the way down to high Class A. With the Manatees, Salome can fill in at DH as he recovers from what the club has dubbed emotional problems. Milwaukee's Double-A and Triple-A teams employ a DH in many games, of course, but only when their opponent is an AL affiliate.

Minnesota Twins
Recalled:
3B Danny Valencia
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Pat Neshek
Option transferred: RHP Deolis Guerra (Triple-A to Double-A)
Reinstated from DL: C Danny Lehmann, 3B Luke Hughes

Optioned to Double-A: C Omir Santos
Option transferred: OF Fernando Martinez (Triple-A to high Class A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Edgar Ramirez, OF Daniel Murphy
Reinstated from DL: OF Lucas Duda, OF Fernando Martinez

Daniel Murphy returned to action on May 21. Less than two weeks later, with Triple-A Buffalo, he sustained a season-ending knee injury while playing second base for just the second time this season. Murphy will not have surgery, but he'll require four to six months to recover from a high-grade tear of the medial cruciate ligament in his right knee.

New York Yankees
Released:
OF Jon Weber
Voluntarily retired: 1B Neall French
Optioned to Triple-A: 1B Juan Miranda
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Jairo Heredia, RHP Zach McAllister, RHP Ben Watkins, C Neil Medchill, OF Rudy Guillen
Reinstated from DL: SS Walter Ibarra

A nondrafted free agent originally signed by the Reds in 1999, Weber is 32 and has had several career highlights. They include playing on the 2005 Minor League Team of the Year, the Jacksonville Suns, whose roster included Matt Kemp, Russell Martin, James Loney, Chad Billingsley and Jonathan Broxton, among others. He has spent parts of the last five seasons in Triple-A, winning a Triple-A National Championship with Durham last year, and also won a gold medal with USA Baseball in the 2009 World Cup. His highlight in 2010 was a hit off Stephen Strasburg on May 29, Strasburg's only Triple-A loss.

McAllister has soreness in his right triceps but was only expected to miss one start. (JM)

Oakland Athletics
Released:
RHP Matt Fitts, RHP Hector Garcia, 1B Brett Harper, 2B Yung Chi Chen, OF Franklin Hernandez

The A's claimed Adam Heether on waivers from the Brewers.

RHP Nelson Figueroa*, OF Willy Taveras
Outrighted to Triple-A, removed from 40-man: RHP Nelson Figueroa
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP B.J. Rosenberg, RHP Ehren Wassermann
Reinstated from DL: RHP Jon Pettibone

Pittsburgh Pirates
Optioned to Triple-A:
RHP Steven Jackson, LHP Brian Burres
Option transferred: RHP Ramon Aguero (Double-A to high Class A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Steven Jackson, 2B Brock Holt, SS Jose de los Santos
Reinstated from DL: RHP Ramon Aguero, SS Greg Picart

St. Louis Cardinals
Released:
RHP Jose Calero, RHP Luis Orozco, RHP Alejandro Pinard, RHP Michael Thompson, LHP John Durham, LHP Kyle Heim, 1B Roberto Perez, 2B Gerardo Mambell

Loaned to Mexican League: OF Amaury Cazana Marti
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Kyle Mura, 1B Andrew Brown, SS Luis Mateo, OF D'Marcus Ingram
Reinstated from DL: RHP Chuck Fick, RHP Francisco Samuel

This marks the fourth consecutive season in which the Cardinals have loaned Cazana Marti, who is a native of Cuba, to the Mexican League. This time he heads to Minatitlan. The 35-year-old corner outfielder established residency in Miami for the ’06 draft, when St. Louis made him an 18th-round selection. Cazana Marti has fared well in Mexico, compiling OPS figures of .963, 1.110 and 1.016 in regular play during in the three previous seasons.

San Diego Padres
Placed on 7-day DL:
SS Beamer Weems, OF Kellen Kulbacki
Optioned to Triple-A: C Dusty Ryan, OF Luis Durango

San Francisco Giants
Released:
OF Eddy Martinez-Esteve
Added to 40-man roster: OF Pat Burrell
Optioned to Triple-A: OF John Bowker
Outrighted to Triple-A, removed from 40-man: RHP Brandon Medders
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Devan Kline, RHP Kevin Pucetas, LHP Joe Paterson, 1B Andy D'Alessio
Reinstated from DL: 1B Michael Ambort, 2B Skyler Stromsmoe
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Henry Sosa

Correspondent Andy Baggarly's eulogy to Eddy Martinez-Esteve, the Giants' top pick in the ’04 draft: "Two days before this year's draft, the Giants released outfielder Martinez-Esteve, a second-rounder out of Florida State. He headed the Giants' draft class because they lost their first-round pick as compensation for signing free agent Michael Tucker. Shoulder woes and other nagging injuries kept Martinez-Esteve from developing, and he did not reach the big leagues."

Seattle Mariners

RHP Jarrett Grube (Southern Maryland (Atlantic)), LHP Billy Traber

Gerardo Avila wasn't suspended. Gerardo Rodriguez was one of the three Myrtle Beach players suspended.

Duarte was with Pittsfield of the Can-Am League and Buller was with Camden of the Atlantic League.

Ian Paxton was not released. He voluntarily retired.

If Canzana Marti is putting up decent numbers, why don't the Cards keep him in the states and give him a shot?  If there any advantage to having him playing in Mexico?  Could you offer up some more info as to why something like this happens?

That was a generous eulogy for Eddy.  His remarkable pig-headedness as a hitter, lack of ability as a defender and general conviction that any and everyone NOT named Eddy Martinez-Esteve deserved blame for his failings were as much the root causes as his injuries.

I'm voting for Joe Thatcher among NDFA's on big league rosters right now.

Derick,
As explained in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch to their Cards beat writer Derrick Goold, Cazana-Marti was the  victim of an OF numbers crunch after the Cards signed Randy Winn.  The Cards had just sent down Jon Jay and Joe Mather (after the Aaron Miles & Winn signings/additions), and they want Allen Craig playing everyday, plus you have a solid OF in Mark Shorey already at Memphis, and I think the Cards want to see what they have in Jim Rapoport since he's FINALLY hitting now.  That means Cazana-Marti gets squeezed out to Mexico….again.

According to MLB's eBis database, the A's released Ian Paxton on June 7.

Aussie Luke Hughes is having a rough time with injuries. Having made his debut with the Twins earlier this year I was hoping to see more opportunities for him. Injuries put a big "what if?" next to a lot of talented players season. I suppose it is the same hazard for a lot of players, but it really made my day when I saw Hughes hit a home run as his first Major League hit. I hope the magic powers of healing lead to a speedy recovery. Nicholas R.W. Henning – Australian Author

<a href=:http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....&quot; title="Milb.com"> has Fernando Cortez going to Montgomery, Tampa Bay's Southern League affiliate.
06/05/2010/Signed as Free Agent/Montgomery Biscuits/Fernando Cortez
But B-Ref has him playing for Birmingham. Interesting.

My favorite NDFA is, without a doubt, Ryan Hanigan.  The only reason he got a contract is because he happened to go to the same college as Jim Bowden, who happened to be the GM at the time.
