In an interesting bit of symmetry, both players released by the Dodgers here entered the organization as international free agents in ’04 and converted from the outfield to the mound in ’08. Closer Trevor Hoffman's ERA borders on 12, his strikeout-to-walk ratio rests at 1-to-1 and he's averaging more than two baserunners per inning. Yet, his struggles are only symptomatic of the big league bullpen's struggles. As a group, their 6.30 ERA ranks 29th in baseball and their 1.73 WHIP ranks 27th. So the Brewers are casting a wide net for relievers, signing a pair of discarded Rays farmhands in Bennett and Morlan as well as Nationals cast-off Brian Bruney (not pictured). And why not? Current Brewers relievers Todd Coffey and John Axford were free-talent finds.

Milwaukee previously flirted with Morlan in the 2008 Rule 5 draft, but ultimately they returned him to Tampa Bay the following spring.

The A's went on an Atlantic League shopping spree in signing Oseguera, Sanchez, Majewski and Watson over the course of two days in late May. The names Majewski and Watson will be familiar to minor league devotees, but Oseguera may need an introduction. The Giants cut the UCLA product this spring, four years after making him a 16th-round pick in ’06.

Not to be confused with the Phillies pitcher of the same name, Jesus Paulino Sanchez, a 35-year-old lefthander, last pitched in affiliated ball in ’04. From what we can tell, he pitched in Korea in ’05, in the Dominican League in ’07 and ’08 and then briefly in the independent United League and the Mexican Pacific League last year. We do know that he finished his previous stay as a Blue Jays farmhand in Triple-A. With York this spring, he went 4-1, 1.63 with 32 strikeouts in 39 innings.

Majewski, 28, saw brief action with the Orioles in ’04 but never seemed to get back on track after missing all of the ’05 season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He began with Camden in ’08, Newark in ’09 and York in ’10, sticking with Atlantic League clubs close to his New Jersey home, before signing with the Astros, Angels and now A's each spring.

Similarly, the 31-year-old Watson signed with Lancaster last July to be near his Pennsylvania home. Previously a member of the A's organization from ’04 through ’06, he has played internationally in Japan and Korea as part of a 12-year pro career.

The Pirates burned a second-round pick, not to mention $725,000, on Felix in ’06. The lefty from Troy never reached Double-A and this season had walked 8.4 batters per nine innings with high Class A Bradenton. We wrote in our ’07 Prospect Handbook that "except for the curveball, the rest of Felix's arsenal is nondescript" and that "he's inconsistent with his control and command, regressing after making progress at Troy this spring."
