Minor League Transactions

This time: Nov. 18-23
Previous installment:
Nov. 6-17

The 40-man additions here are duplicated in our team-by-team rundown. Elsewhere, we find news of a few free agents signing and also the Giants formally going about adding Angel Villalona to the restricted list. His status for ’10 remains up in the air. He has been freed on bail but still stands charged of first-degree murder in the Dominican Republic.

Check out the Transactions Glossary for the key to deciphering the various inactive lists presented here.

The Yankees have waited for ’06 fourth-rounder Colin Curtis, a left fielder with a career .375 slugging percentage, to increase his power output. The 24-year-old played very well in the Arizona Fall League, batting .397/.472/.731 and leading everybody in slugging. He’s Rule 5 eligible now, having not been added to the 40-man roster.

Oakland Athletics
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Fautino de los Santos, RHP Justin Souza, LHP Pedro Figueroa, 1B Chris Carter

Philadelphia Phillies
Signed:
RHP Jason Anderson, RHP Alexander Concepcion, 1B Andy Tracy, SS Wilson Valdez, OF Rich Thompson, OF Dewayne Wise

Valdez and Wise, a pair of minor league free agents who had notable big league playing time in ’09, signed early and provide quality insurance for the Phillies to stash at Triple-A.

Wise, who will be 32 next season, appeared in a career-high 84 games for the White Sox, batting .225/.262/.366 but serving mostly as a defensive replacement. He single-handedly saved Mark Buehrle’s perfect game in July, and in ’08 he started three playoff games for Chicago, belting a double and a homer against the Rays.

Valdez, 31, served a similar role for the Mets in ’09, garnering playing time mostly as the result of being the only ambulatory shortstop in New York after Jose Reyes and Alex Cora went down with injuries. He batted .256/.326/.337 in 86 at-bats.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Signed:
RHP Virgil Vasquez, C Hector Gimenez
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Ramon Aguero, RHP Brad Lincoln, RHP Bryan Morris, OF Gorkys Hernandez

St. Louis Cardinals
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Adam Ottavino, RHP Francisco Samuel, LHP Tyler Norrick, C Bryan Anderson, 1B Mark Hamilton, 3B Allen Craig, OF Jon Jay, OF Daryl Jones

San Diego Padres
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Craig Italiano, LHP Steve Garrison, OF Chad Huffman

A participant in the Pacific Coast League all-star game, Huffman bounced back with Triple-A Portland after a couple down years in power-suppressing San Antonio. He batted .269/.361/.469 with 20 homers in 135 games.

San Francisco Giants
Placed on restricted list:
1B Angel Villalona
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Kevin Pucetas, 1B Brett Pill, OF Darren Ford, OF Francisco Peguero

Seattle Mariners
Signed:
RHP Steve Bray, RHP Steven Shell, C Jose Yepez
Granted free agency: SS Josh Wilson
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Danny Cortes, RHP Ricky Orta, RHP J.C. Ramirez, RHP Anthony Varvaro, LHP Edward Paredes, OF Ezequiel Carrera
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: SS Josh Wilson

Teammates with Double-A West Tenn, Orta and (in particular) Vavaro earned their way onto the 40-man with strong showings in the Arizona Fall League. A fourth-round pick from Miami in ’06, Orta continued to take to his relief role, striking out eight and walking none in eight AFL innings. Tommy John surgery wiped out most of Varvaro’s ’06 season, but the ’05 12th-rounder slowly has worked his way back. He walked more than seven batters per nine innings during the regular season, but appeared much sharper in the AFL, boasting an 11-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 13 1/3 innings. Oh, and the St. John’s product averaged nearly 93 mph on his fastball. Both relievers will be 25 next season and are poised to contribute in Seattle.

Tampa Bay Rays
Signed:
RHP Joe Bateman, LHP R.J. Swindle
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Jeremy Hellickson, LHP Alex Torres, OF Desmond Jennings

Bateman and Swindle have long track records of success as minor league relievers—not to mention low arm angles—so at worst they’ll provide Triple-A Durham with significant tactical weapons.

Texas Rangers
Added to 40-man roster:
LHP Michael Kirkman, LHP Zach Phillips

Toronto Blue Jays
Signed:
LHP Davis Romero, C Kyle Phillips
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Rei Gonzalez

Washington Nationals
Signed:
RHP Logan Kensing, C Jamie Burke
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Juan Jaime, LHP Atahualpa Severino, LHP Aaron Thompson

What does reinstated for inactive list mean? Florida reinstates Allen Baxter every year and still hasnt played in like 3 years? What gives

When does the list of Rule 5 Eligible guys come out?

I thought I would add that Villalona is probably on the restricted list because his visa was taken away by the U.S. If he gets off – and reports of him paying off the deceased family probably is a precursor of that – he should be able to get his visa back, I would think.
