This time: Nov. 6-17
Previous installment: Oct. 26-Nov. 5
The full list of this year’s minor league free agents is available elsewhere on our site. Here you’ll find a spattering of 40-man roster-related moves—players removed and players added in advance of Friday’s deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 draft.
Check out the Transactions Glossary for the key to deciphering the various inactive lists presented here.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Granted free agency: OF Alex Romero
Atlanta Braves
Signed: 3B Wes Timmons (re-signed)
Released: OF Brian Barton
The Braves traded Blaine Boyer to the Cardinals in late April to acquire Barton, who had been a St. Louis big league Rule 5 pick in ’08. The Cardinals nabbed him from the Indians, meaning that in the past three years Barton played for three organizations. (Incidentally, the Cards lost Boyer to a waiver claim by the D’backs in June.) In 114 games for Triple-A Gwinnett last year, Barton batted .266/.354/.390 with seven homers and 46 RBIs. He intends to suit up for a fourth organization in ’10.
Baltimore Orioles
Signed: LHP Chris George (re-signed), 3B Scott Moore (re-signed)
Boston Red Sox
Released: RHP Michael Lennox, RHP Wang-Yi Lin, OF Juan Bonifacio, OF Roberto Feliz
Granted free agency: RHP Fernando Cabrera, OF Joey Gathright
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: RHP Miguel Gonzalez
Boston tabbed Miguel Gonzalez as a big league Rule 5 pick a year ago from the Angels, who had signed the Mexico native from nearby Los Angeles Mission JC. Trouble was, Gonzalez was coming off an ’08 season wiped out by injury. He endured the same fate in ’09. He last pitched for Double-A Arkansas in ’07, posting a 3.38 ERA and an 81-to-42 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 131 innings. Now that he’s no longer bound by Rule 5 restrictions (or a member of the 40-man roster), Gonzalez will, in all likelihood, head back to Double-A next season.
Chicago Cubs
Released: 3B Chris Weimer
Chicago White Sox
Released: LHP Enrique Lechuga
Cincinnati Reds
Granted free agency: C Corky Miller, OF Darnell McDonald
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: RHP Justin Lehr, C Wilkin Castillo

Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: C Paul Phillips
Detroit Tigers
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Jay Sborz
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: 2B Michael Hollimon
Sborz was a second-round pick back in 2003, so he’s out-lasted first-rounder Kyle Sleeth, who retired after arm trouble. Sborz has had his share of injury issues and has pitched just 253 innings in seven pro seasons. He advanced past A-ball this year for the first time.
Florida Marlins
Signed: SS Tim Torres (re-signed)
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Hayden Penn
Houston Astros
Signed: C Brian Esposito (re-signed), C Lou Santangelo (re-signed), SS Marcos Cabral (re-signed)

Los Angeles Dodgers

Milwaukee Brewers

Minnesota Twins

Released: 1B Justin Huber
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Juan Morillo
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: 1B Justin Huber
Huber gets a deserved chance to strut his stuff in Japan’s Central League. He signed with Hiroshima this week. The Australia native turned 27 in July and turned in a fine season for Rochester, batting .273/.356/.482 with 22 homers, his highest total at the Triple-A level. His Triple-A tour has taken him from Norfolk to Omaha to Portland to Rochester, where he’s maintained a .474 slugging percentage over nearly 1,600 plate appearances.
Other reports indicate that the hard-throwing Morillo also was headed to the Far East. He reportedly signed on with Rakuten of the Pacific League.
New York Mets
Released: RHP Jimber Mueses, RHP Johnathan White, C Julio Rivera, C Orlando Rodriguez, 1B Giovanni Ortiz, 2B Matt Gaski, OF Scott Grimes, OF John Servidio

Granted free agency: RHP Tyler Walker
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: RHP John Ennis, RHP Tyler Walker, C Paul Hoover, 1B Andy Tracy
Pittsburgh Pirates

Outrighted to Mexican League: RHP Rodolfo Aguirre
St. Louis Cardinals
Released: RHP Omar Diaz
Granted free agency: 3B Joe Thurston
San Diego Padres
Signed: RHP Nick Hall (Windy City (Frontier))
A Northern Illinois graduate, Hall originally signed as a nondrafted free agent with the Phillies back in ’06. Philadelphia released him the following spring and he then sat out two seasons before latching on with Windy City of the independent Frontier League in ’09. Hall, 25, notched 59 strikeouts in 41 innings while serving as closer for the ThunderBolts.
Tampa Bay Rays
Signed: RHP Jairo de la Rosa (re-signed)
Released: OF Jason Perry
De la Rosa converted to pitching just this year after hitting .236 in five years as a shortstop.
Toronto Blue Jays
Released: RHP Jonas Cuotto, RHP Ryan Koch, RHP Jason Roenicke, RHP David Slovak, LHP Hunter Moody, 1B Kevin Denis-Fortier, 2B Kyle Gilligan
Added to 40-man roster: 1B Brian Dopirak
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: LHP Davis Romero, C Kyle Phillips
Not even the Blue Jays’ July 31 acquisition of brother Josh could spare Jason Roenicke, a 19th-round pick from UC Santa Barbara in ’08.
Washington Nationals
Voluntarily retired: C John Poppert
Granted free agency: RHP Logan Kensing
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: RHP Logan Kensing, 2B Pete Orr
