Teams faced a midnight EST deadline on Nov. 20 to add players to their 40-man rosters in order to keep them free from the clutches of rival organizations. Any player with requisite experience left unprotected is fair game in December’s Rule 5 draft. Eligibility for the Rule 5 hinges on the player’s age when signed.
• Players signed at age 19 and older must have four years in the organization. This group consists mostly of college players drafted in ’06.
• Players signed at age 18 or younger must have five years in the organization. This pertains mostly to players signed internationally or drafted out of high school in ’05.
Players in [brackets] were added to 40-man rosters earlier in the offseason to prevent them from qualifying for minor league free agency. On average, they have two or three additional years of experience than the players here, so they don’t count against the teams’ totals. But by the same token, they qualify as offseason additions, seeing as they did not receive September callups.

One more should be added to Detroit in brackets: RHP Jay Sborz was added to the Tigers’ 40-man roster on November 6 to prevent him from becoming a minor league free agent.
Posted by Jared P. | November 21, 2009 at 9:32 pm | ShortcutIs there a database for international signings that required for this year’s 40 man roster additions. I would like to know. Thanks
Posted by tony russo | November 22, 2009 at 9:00 am | ShortcutTony, I don’t believe such a database exists.

Posted by Ben Badler | November 23, 2009 at 3:24 pm | ShortcutI am curious if BA was surprised by any of the additions, or non-additions, especially regarding my team, the Indians. The Cleveland addition I thought least deserved was Wes Hodges. Some others questioned de la Cruz since he’s only had 14 innings in High A and doubted he would be drafted. Who did Cleveland leave off? Matt McBride who had a solid Arizona after a passable AA debut. Chuck Lofgren who debuted at AAA and peaked as a BA No. 2 prospect.
Posted by elliot | November 23, 2009 at 3:45 pm | ShortcutI think they had to protect de la Cruz. Is he major league ready? No. Does his injury deflate his value as a prospect? Sure. But he would have more upside than anyone in the Rule 5 draft, and they probably would have lost him to a non-contending team in 2010 that would have stashed him on the DL or otherwise limited his usage next year. McBride is a 24-year-old without a decent bat and no position; his receiving skills are VERY raw. Lofgren I could see a team taking a chance on, but right now he’s at best in the 20-30 range in that farm system.
Posted by Ben Badler | November 23, 2009 at 4:17 pm | ShortcutSo with all those additions, where is the list of those who weren’t protected, and now are subjected to get chosen in the upcoming Rule V draft? Not everyone, just a list of who is likely to get chosen.
Posted by Will | November 23, 2009 at 5:05 pm | ShortcutShould the Indians have bothered protecting Hodges? His AAA OPS was 620; he made 15 errors in 50 games; and he suffered another injury-plagued season. Would anyone have drafted him? If so why would the Indians care, with Chisenhall coming up behind him? Are they that desparate for a RH bat?
