Luis Atilano is still playing in the IBAF World Cup for Puerto Rico, so I really don’t understand why the Nationals activated him from the inactive list (early this month, they put the player in that list for the purpose of giving him the opportunity to play for his homeland) and recalled him.

I’ve seen teams in past years “recall” the remaining players on their 40-man roster, even though those players never actually joined the team. It must be some kind of technical paper move.

I have a question about a type of transaction that’s not mentioned on these listings, but is worth noting. Why do teams place players on the 15-day DL in September? The active roster is already expanded, and the 15-day DL doesn’t open a 40-man spot. Non-contending teams do it sometimes, so it’s not some little trick to get another playoff roster move for October.

The roster on the Nationals official site shows those pitchers as being inactive.

Also, for the Pirates, Lincoln, Alvarez, and Molleken are playing the WBC. Shouldn’t these be shown as placed on the inactive list, not re-instated from temporary inactive list

Yes and yes.

Montz was DFA’d, but not in this transactions window. Members of the 40-man are always “recalled” before being removed from the roster, whether by outright or trade.

Did the Nationals really recall RHP Luis Atilano, RHP Collin Balester, RHP Shairon Martis, RHP Ryan Mattheus, RHP Stephen Strasburg, & LHP Matt Chico? Are they accruing service time right now?

And I thought Luke Montz was designated for assignment.
