Petitt continues to prove that he can hit, pure and simple, and the Angels rewarded him with his first callup. This season, the 25-year-old Loyola Marymount product batted .323/.385/.485 with eight homers and 30 doubles in 96 games for Triple-A Salt Lake. While Pettit suffered through an injury-plagued ’08, he first burst on to the scene two years ago by ripping off a .346/.429/.579 line in 64 games for low Class A Cedar Rapids. He was a bit older at 22, but Petitt has proven his mettle as he’s moved up.

Axford signed with the Yankees in ’06 as a nondrafted redshirt senior out of Canisius. A native of Simcoe, Ontario, he had pitched at Notre Dame prior to that. New York released him in December ’07, but he’s battled back to make his big league debut after climbing three levels, from high Class A Brevard County to Milwaukee. The 27-year-old Axford had an eye-opening stint with Triple-A Nashville in which he fanned 37 and walked 19 in 33 innings overall, and he handcuffed righthanded batters at .178/.299/.233 with just four extra-base hits (all doubles) in 73 at-bats.

The Mariners had high hopes for hard-throwing Stephen Kahn, whom they took from Loyola Marymount in the fifth round of the ’05 draft, but repeated injury sidetracked his career. He appeared in only one game this season, allowing three runs in one Rookie-level Arizona League inning, as he battled shoulder inflammation. Kahn missed the entirety of ’07 and ’08 with knee injuries.

Moore, a sixth-round pick from Texas-Arlington in ’06, continued his steady rise through the system, finishing the season in Seattle after playing well in the second half for Triple-A Tacoma. The 25-year-old backstop batted .294/.346/.429 with nine home runs in 91 games for the Rainiers.
