Montero Out For Season

Yankees correspondent George King reports that Double-A catcher Jesus Montero figures to miss the last month of the minor league season after sustaining a fractured middle finger on his left hand.

According to King, the 19-year-old Venezuelan suffered the injury on Saturday night while catching a game with Trenton. His timetable for return was set at six weeks, meaning that a winter ball stint, either in the Arizona Fall or the Venezuelan league, is not out of the question.

Disappointingly, this injury likely removes Montero from serious consideration for our Minor League Player of the Year award. He batted .337/.370/.562 in 347 at-bats, mashing 17 home runs and driving in 70 runs in 92 games split almost evenly between Trenton and high Class A Tampa.

Matt,

What have you heard about Montero’s defense lately? He plent a good amount of time DHing this season.

No one seems to think Montero can be even an average catcher in the big leagues. He doesn’t receive or throw particularly well. But it might not matter. Even with Teixeira around, the Yankees will make room for Montero’s bat.

For a parallel case, look at early-career Carlos Delgado. He caught in Double-A and Triple-A, but not at all, really, in the big leagues. In fact, he spent his age-24 and 25 seasons as a DH for Toronto, waiting until John Olerud left in ’97 to take over first base.

Montero’s overall ratio of games caught to games DH’ed is 59 to 33 (1.78-to-1), but keep in mind he split time behind the plate in the FSL with Austin Romine, much as he did in the SAL last season. At Double-A, Montero caught 33 games and DH’ed in 11.

Thanks for the info Matt.
