He’s a fundamentally sound defender in center and right field, with an arm that racked up 10 assists in International League play and garnered attention in our Best Tools survey. A Cardinals 13th-round pick in ’02 out of Delaware, Gorecki made his way to the Braves after he drew his release from St. Louis at the end of spring training ’08.

What’s notable here is not that the Astros signed Alaniz, a high school righthander passed over in the ’09 draft, it’s the size of his signing bonus: $160,000, which was more than Houston awarded its fifth-round pick.
