After coming within three steals of a 30-30 rookie season, Young has done precious little with his subsequent 1,065 plate appearances. In the two seasons since ’07, he’s hit just .230/.308/.415 with 29 home runs and 25 stolen bases. Add in 260 strikeouts—a whiff in nearly 28 percent of his at-bats, which would be acceptable if he was hitting for plus power—and Young’s demotion to Triple-A ought to be beneficial to both parties. He’s still just 25 years old.

The lefty-hitting Francisco has bashed 71 home runs in the past three season—and he still has a few weeks left this season to pad that total. Few doubt his impressive raw power. It’s his feel for hitting and knowledge of the strike zone that continues to raise doubts. Still, a .281/.317./501 showing is impressive for a 22-year-old in the Double-A Southern League; a 20-to-91 walk-to-strikeout ratio, a little less so.

A Red Sox’ seventh-round pick in ’06 from a California JC, Negron has moved back to his amateur position of shortstop this season after recently spending a lot of time at second base. A 23-year-old righthanded batter, he hit .264/.338/.347 in 409 at-bats for high Class A Salem, the same level where he finished the ’08 season. Negron has swiped 97 bases in four pro seasons, showing his above-average speed, but for a player who doesn’t hit for power (.355 career slugging) and isn’t a pure shortstop, he comes up a bit short in the hit department.

Bourgeois, 27, has shown an intriguing utility profile in parts of four seasons in Triple-A, but prior to his recent callup he had received just three big league at-bats in which to demonstrate those qualities. This season for Nashville he batted .316/.354/.401 in 424 at-bats, while stealing 36 bases in 43 attempts and playing mostly center field and second base. It’s a representative showing for Bourgeois, who gets a big league look now that the Brewers have shaken things up. Escobar is the other beneficiary of Milwaukee’s demotions of Hall and Hardy.
