Mickolio, everyone’s favorite 6-foot-9 reliever from Utah Valley State, quietly was putting up a fine season with Triple-A Norfolk, posting a 3.35 ERA in 30 games to go with a 44-to-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Everything the 25-year-old throws is hard, with his fastball sitting at 93-97 mph with sink and his slider made even filthier by the fact that he throws from a low three-quarters slot and across his body. To righthanded batters, it looks like Mickolio is delivering the ball from third base. The Mariners selected him in the 2006 draft’s 18th round, but included him less than two years later in the ill-fated Erik Bedard trade.

How about a hand for the Cal Poly draft class of 2006? A 20th-rounder that year, Fien dominated at Triple-A to earn his first big league callup. With Toledo, the 25-year-old employed his low-90s sinker, which he command to both sides of the plate, to limit righthanded batters to a .223 average, five walks and six extra-base hits (.340 slugging) in 103 at-bats. The 25-year-old had less success versus lefthanded batters, but his slider and changeup flash average on occasion.

The Astros’ Bud Norris (see below) also had an eventful week, three years after leaving the Cal Poly campus.

Tabata, 20, earned his promotion to Indianapolis by batting .303/.370/.404 in 61 games with Double-A Altoona. He showed his trademark natural hitting ability by not only hitting for average, but also by not striking out. The native of Venezuela whiffed just 25 times, while drawing 20 walks, in 228 at-bats for the Curve. He joined the organization in last July’s Xavier Nady trade with the Yankees.

Carrillo last pitched at the Triple-A level on April 30, 2007, a day after his 23rd birthday. Since then, the Padres’ 2005 first-round pick had Tommy John surgery on his ailing elbow and then struggled for two years to recapture his pre-operative command. Now 25, Carrillo seems to be finding his way once again. Prior to his promotion to Portland, he went 8-4, 4.24 with a 57-to-37 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 121 Double-A innings. His 20 starts for San Antonio also established a personal standard for one season. Carrillo’s improvement can be traced by viewing his April/May performance side by side with his June/July showing. In 10 starts during the opening months, he went 2-3, 4.97 with a 1.29 K-to-BB ratio; in 10 starts after he went 6-1, 3.57 with a 1.88 ratio.

Tampa Bay released Houser, the club’s second-round pick in 2003, so that it could make room for reliever Jeff Bennett on its roster. Houser, though, still has a minor league suspension totaling 25 games hanging over his head should he latch on with another club on a minor league deal. He served half of his 50-game penalty for amphetamine use at the end of the 2007 season, but his addition to the Rays’ 40-man roster temporarily lifted that obligation.

Lobaton joined the organization on a waiver claim from the Padres. The 24-year-old native of Venezuela batted .241/.292/.353 in 39 games for Triple-A Portland, making his big league debut in early July after seven years in the minors.
