Minor League Transactions

Previous installment:
May 31-June 6

Check out the Transactions Glossary for the key to deciphering the various inactive lists presented here.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Bryan Augenstein, LHP Wade Miley
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Leo Rosales
Optioned to Double-A: LHP Daniel Schlereth

Atlanta Braves
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Tommy Hanson, 1B Barbaro Canizares
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Jordan Schafer

For Hanson, the Triple-A International League’s leader in ERA (1.49) and strikeouts (90), a big league callup was only a matter of time. Even casual baseball fans know that he’s got the best stuff in the Braves’ system. But fans of all stripes may be less familiar with Canizares, a 29-year-old first baseman who defected from Cuba and signed with the Braves in February ’06. Though he’s a sturdy 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, Canizares has a real knack for hitting, as evidenced by his .344/.412/.533 batting line in 58 games for Triple-A Gwinnett. He ranked second in the IL batting race at the time of his callup, while placing second in on-base and fourth in slugging. An injury to Greg Norton paved the way for Canizares, who has batted .319/.375/.469 with 24 home runs and 58 doubles in 894 Triple-A at-bats.

Hanson said of Canizares, his former Gwinnett teammate: "He just goes up there and rakes. That’s what he does. He’s a hitter. When I was there he was on a tear."

Schafer will miss two weeks or more with a deep bone bruise in his left hand.

Baltimore Orioles
Released:
RHP Donis de la Cruz
Added to 40-man roster: 1B Oscar Salazar
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP David Hernandez
Placed on 7-day DL: 2B Justin Turner
Reinstated from DL: RHP Jim Hoey, C Brendan Monaghan, OF Daniel Figueroa

Salazar, 30, has been utilized mostly as a first and third baseman since signing with the Orioles for the ’07 season. But he’s played enough corner outfield—and he’s hit well enough—to warrant an extended big league look as a reserve. Salazar was batting .372/.408/.618 with 10 homers and 17 doubles in 199 at-bats for Triple-A Norfolk, ranking first in the IL in average and second in slugging. His utility is not lost on Orioles manager Dave Trembley.

Boston Red Sox
Released:
1B Sandy Madera
Traded: OF Chip Ambres to Mets for future considerations
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Dave McKae, LHP Javier Lopez, C Ty Weeden, OF Sean Danielson
Reinstated from DL: RHP Dave McKae, LHP Nick Hagadone, C Sandy Madera, OF Daniel Nava, OF Josh Reddick, OF Jon Van Every

The Red Sox’ first pick in the ’07 draft, Hagadone missed most of the ’08 season after having Tommy John surgery. The supplemental first-rounder from Washington has huge arm strength but had compiled just 34 innings in his first two pro summers because of the injury.

Chicago Cubs
Released:
3B Kyle Reynolds
Optioned to Triple-A: 1B Jake Fox, 2B Bobby Scales
Placed on 7-day DL: C Mark Johnson
Reinstated from DL: RHP Aaron Shafer, 2B Luis Rivas, 3B Matt Camp

The best hitter in the minors through May, Fox batted .417/.429/.583 (5-for-12) in sporadic play for the Cubs—which included going 5-for-6 as a pinch-hitter. Chicago, though, optioned him back to Iowa when Aaron Miles was ready to return from the disabled list.

Chicago White Sox
Signed:
RHP Freddy Garcia
Recalled: RHP Jose Contreras
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Aaron Poreda
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Wes Whisler
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: 3B Wilson Betemit
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Mike Johnston, C Corky Miller, 2B Drew Garcia, 3B Kyle Shelton
Reinstated from DL: RHP Jeff Marquez, C Mike Grace, OF Miguel Negron

The system’s top pitching prospect, Poreda struck out three of the first six batters he faced in the big leagues, working as a reliever. In 11 starts for Double-A Birmingham, the ’07 first-rounder went 5-4, 2.39 with 69 strikeouts, 35 walks and one home run allowed in 64 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati Reds
Released:
RHP Juan Aquino
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP James Avery, C Korey Feiner, SS Yen-Wen Kuo

OF Jason Tyner
Recalled: RHP Ryan Perry
Added to 40-man roster: SS Don Kelly
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Ryan Perry, 1B Jeff Larish, OF Clete Thomas
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Ben Guez, OF Kyle Peter
Reinstated from DL: RHP Brayan Villarreal, OF Billy Nowlin, OF Casper Wells

Originally signed by the Tigers as an eighth-round pick in ’01, Kelly bolted for minor league free agency after the ’06 season, spending one year each with the Pirates and Diamondbacks before returning to Detroit this season. A 29-year-old, lefty-hitting infielder from Point Park College in Pittsburgh, Kelly was off to a fine start with Triple-A Toledo: .339/.407/.475 with 10 doubles, 14 steals in 17 attempts and a 19-to-38 walk to strikeout ratio.

Florida Marlins
Released:
RHP Ron Hill
Placed on suspended list: OF Cameron Maybin
Recalled: RHP Ricky Nolasco
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Tim Wood
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: RHP Hayden Penn
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Daniel Barone, SS Ryan Klosterman
Reinstated from DL: RHP Garrett Parcell

The Pacific Coast League suspended Maybin for "aggressively arguing a call and bumping (an umpire)." The 22-year-old was batting .297/.360/.429 in 27 games with Triple-A New Orleans.

Houston Astros
Released:
LHP Carlos Lazu, OF Chris Turner
Recalled: LHP Wesley Wright

Recalled: RHP Kevin Jepsen, 2B Sean Rodriguez
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Jose Arredondo, 2B Howie Kendrick
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP David Herndon, RHP Vladimir Veras, OF Peter Bourjos

A former Orioles’ top prospect, Majewski has auditioned for affiliated clubs in the independent Atlantic League in each of the past two seasons. Baltimore, who made him a third-round pick in ’02, cut him at the end of spring training ’08. Last year, the New Jersey native and product of Rutgers signed on with Newark. This time, the 27-year-old Majewski joined Camden, for whom he batted .310 with four home runs in 28 games before catching the Angels’ attention.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Recalled:
2B Blake DeWitt
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Robert Boothe, RHP Eric Krebs, C Danny Ardoin
Reinstated from DL: 3B Austin Gallagher

Reinstated from DL: RHP Mike Cisco, 2B Carlos Leon, 3B Mike Cervenak, SS Jorge Velandia
Placed on temporarily inactive list: C Kevin Nelson
Reinstated from inactive list: C Kevin Nelson

On the heels of a breakthrough campaign at Double-A, Donald was off to a slow start through 50 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, batting just .230/.293/.324. Now the 24-year-old will have to wait about a month to try to reverse those trends. A torn meniscus in his left knee will require surgery.

In a drug test, Ozuna showed an elevated testosterone/epitestosterone ratio, a performance-enhancing substance violation that resulted in a 50-game suspension for the 34-year-old.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Released:
RHP Josh Hill
Acquired: OF Chris Snelling from Padres for future considerations
Recalled: RHP Charlie Morton
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Tom Gorzelanny
Placed on 7-day DL: C Steven Suarez, 2B Josh Bonifay, 3B Neil Walker

The Padres loaned Snelling, whom they signed as a minor league free agent in the offseason, to the Mexican League, where he batted .324/.435/.520 with five home runs and 16 doubles in 179 at-bats for Monterrey. The 27-year-old Aussie hit .370 for Triple-A Tacoma back in ’05, but he had stumbled through three abbreviated, lousy seasons in the interim.

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Omar Poveda, RHP Michael Schlact, LHP Ryan O’Malley, 1B Nate Gold, SS Guilder Rodriguez
Reinstated from DL: C Max Ramirez

Fukumori, 31, demonstrated why he never could hold down the closer’s job in Japan. Since signing with Texas for the ’08 season, he’s accumulated a grand total of four big league innings, in which time he allowed nine runs, 11 hits, four walks and two home runs, leading to a 20.25 ERA. Fukumori wasn’t all that much better in Triple-A, where he posted a 5.48 ERA in 64 innings for Oklahoma, while striking out 40 and allowing 79 hits.

Do you know what the status of Josh Phelps and Dallas McPherson is? Both signed with the Giants, but I haven’t seen anything on them since then.

Our Giants correspondent Andy Baggarly has updates on his blog. In short, both players remain in extended spring training while rehabbing from injuries—McPherson with back spasms and Phelps with a pinched nerve in his right shoulder.

Just letting everyone know that ex-Twins and Blue Jay David Shinskie has accepted a scholarship to play QB at Boston College.
