Minor League Transactions

This time: May 31-June 6
Previous installment:
May 24-30

Check out the Transactions Glossary for the key to deciphering the various inactive lists presented here. Last week’s Prospect Injury Report features updates on the status of Jason Heyward and Justin Smoak.

We may begin to see ’09 draft signings begin to trickle in starting with our next installment.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Signed:
SS Ed Rogers
Recalled: 1B Josh Whitesell
Reinstated from DL: RHP Ryan Cook, RHP Bryan Woodall

Rogers hit .299 with seven doubles in 33 games as the everyday shortstop for Bridgeport of the independent Atlantic League before signing with Arizona. He played in the Nationals system last year, but found no takers on the minor league free agent market last winter.

Atlanta Braves
Traded:
RHP Charlie Morton, LHP Jeff Locke and OF Gorkys Hernandez to Pirates for OF Nate McLouth
Placed on suspended list: RHP Rico Reid
Recalled: RHP Charlie Morton, OF Brian Barton, OF Gregor Blanco
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Brian Barton, OF Jordan Schafer
Reinstated from DL: 3B Albaro Campusano
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Matt Small

Though his future remains bright, Schafer, 22, hit a rough patch in the big leagues in May, a stretch during which the rookie was eaten alive by strikeouts. With 40 whiffs in 101 at-bats (covering 29 May games), Schafer’s overall line plummeted to .204/.313/.287 through 167 at-bats.

Baltimore Orioles
Signed:
C Linares Ford
Released: RHP Gerardo Casadiego, RHP Brad Hennessey
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Alberto Castillo
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: C Chad Moeller
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Daniel Figueroa
Reinstated from DL: RHP Gerardo Casadiego, RHP Brad Hennessey

Boston Red Sox
Released:
RHP Justin Hedrick, C Zak Farkes
Placed on suspended list: RHP Austin Bailey
Optioned to Triple-A: 1B Jeff Bailey
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Jon Van Every
Reinstated from DL: RHP Josh Papelbon, 2B Jeff Natale

A Boston native who attended Harvard, Farkes, 26, signed as a nondrafted free agent in ’05. He had not advanced past high Class A competition in five pro seasons, and he was batting .226/.270/.387 in 34 games for Salem at the time of his release.

Chicago Cubs
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Justin Bristow, RHP Randy Jackson, SS Matt Matulia
Reinstated from DL: OF So Taguchi

Chicago White Sox
Released:
RHP Luis Teis, C Francisco Hernandez, C Eric Hollis
Recalled: RHP Kelvin Jimenez
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Wes Whisler, SS Gordon Beckham
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: RHP Kelvin Jimenez, C Corky Miller
Placed on 7-day DL: C Mike Grace
Reinstated from DL: RHP Miguel Socolovich, C Eric Hollis
Reinstated from inactive list: C Francisco Hernandez

Beckham, 22, zoomed through the minor leagues in just 59 games. The eighth overall pick last June, he batted .330/.381/.528 with a minor league-leading 23 doubles in 176 at-bats. And he did so while playing all over the infield, in anticipation of a similar role in the big leagues—as a rookie, at least.

Cincinnati Reds
Signed:
LHP Tom Cochran
Released: LHP Kyle Aselton
Placed on restricted list: RHP Will Hudgens
Recalled: RHP Jared Burton, LHP Matt Maloney
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Jared Burton, C Wilkin Castillo
Option transferred: 1B Yonder Alonso (high Class A to Double-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Alexander Smit, C Korey Feiner
Reinstated from DL: RHP James Avery, 2B Drew Sutton, SS Jose Gualdron, SS Jake Kahaulelio
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Scott Carroll

Cochran, a Red Sox’ 18th-round pick in ’03, spent part or all of the past five seasons pitching in independent ball, mostly in the Frontier and Can-Am leagues. The 26-year-old started this year with Lancaster of the Atlantic League and went 3-2, 4.67 with 22 strikeouts in 27 innings.

Cleveland Indians
Signed:
SS Kyle Haines
Recalled: LHP Tony Sipp, C Chris Gimenez, 2B Josh Barfield
Optioned to high Class A: RHP Fausto Carmona
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Joey Mahalic, RHP Scott Roehl, LHP Brandon Taylor
Reinstated from DL: RHP Josh Judy, LHP Ryan Miller, OF Matt Brown

The Indians actually demoted Carmona further down the ladder than Kinston, sending him to the Rookie-level Arizona League to rebuild his confidence and his mechanics.

Gimenez, a 19th-round pick in ’04, joins a distinguished group of ex-University of Nevada players who have played in the big leagues this season: Ryan Church (Mets), Chris Dickerson (Reds), Brett Hayes (Marlins), Joe Inglett (Blue Jays), Kevin Kouzmanoff (Padres), Corky Miller (White Sox), Lyle Overbay (Blue Jays) and Chad Qualls (Diamondbacks).

Colorado Rockies
Released:
RHP Felito Dominguez
Recalled: OF Carlos Gonzalez
Added to 40-man roster: C Edwin Bellorin
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Matt Murton

Gonzalez, 23, compiled a minor league-leading 59 RBIs for Triple-A Colorado Springs prior to his callup. He batted .339/.418/.630 with 10 homers, 12 doubles and an improved 22-to-32 walk-to-strikeout ratio in 192 at-bats with the Sky Sox.

Detroit Tigers
Placed on 7-day DL:
LHP Mauricio Robles, OF Billy Nowlin

Florida Marlins
Released:
C John Purdom, 3B Jacob Blackwood
Recalled: RHP Carlos Martinez, RHP Cristhian Martinez, RHP Tim Wood, OF Alejandro De Aza
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Rick VandenHurk, C Brett Hayes
Optioned to Double-A: RHP Cristhian Martinez
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: RHP Carlos Martinez
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Derell McCall, RHP Adalberto Mendez, RHP Kyle Winters
Reinstated from DL: RHP Kyle Gunderson, RHP Carlos Martinez, LHP Carlos Vasquez, 1B Logan Morrison, 1B Gaby Sanchez, OF Jai Miller
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Henry Owens

Houston Astros
Placed on 7-day DL:
OF Jay Austin
Reinstated from DL: RHP Chia-Jen Lo, SS Jhon Florentino
Placed on temporarily inactive list: LHP Andy Van Hekken

Kansas City Royals
Signed:
OF Tim Raines Jr.
Released: OF Will Tucker
Recalled: RHP Luke Hochevar
Added to 40-man roster: C Brayan Pena
Optioned to Triple-A: 2B Tug Hulett
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Carson Bryant, RHP Justin Garcia
Reinstated from DL: RHP Henry Barrera, RHP Zach Peterson
Reinstated from inactive list: 3B Jason Taylor, OF Jarrod Dyson

Los Angeles Angels

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Ryan Aldridge, RHP Rudy Seanez, OF Gabe Jacobo, OF Chris Pettit
Reinstated from DL: RHP Ysmael Carmona, LHP Robert Fish
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Ryan Aldridge

In the midst of a breakout season, Pettit suffered a fractured left wrist that will require surgery. He batted .367/.411/.556 with 21 doubles in 50 games for Triple-A Salt Lake.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Recalled:
RHP Travis Schlichting
Optioned to Triple-A: C A.J. Ellis
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Marlon Arias, OF Travis Vetters
Reinstated from DL: RHP Mario Alvarez, RHP Paul Koss

Milwaukee Brewers
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Mike Burns, RHP Chris Smith
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Rafael Lluberes, OF Erik Miller
Reinstated from DL: LHP Daniel Merklinger
Placed on temporarily inactive list: OF Drew Anderson, OF Chris Duffy

The Brewers dipped into their Triple-A reliever reserve, summoning from Nashville Burns and Smith, a pair of righthanders with mediocre stuff who signed as minor league free agents last offseason. The duo will replace Jorge Julio (released) and Mark DiFelice (ailing). Burns, 30, went 6-2, 2.98 in 10 starts for the Sounds, striking out 40 and walking 11 in 63 1/3 innings. Pitching exclusively in relief at Nashville, Smith, 28, converted 12 of 14 saves while striking out 35 batters and walking four in 32 2/3 innings.

Minnesota Twins
Released:
LHP Mike Gosling
Recalled: 2B Alexi Casilla
Option transferred: SS Steve Tolleson (Double-A to Triple-A)
Reinstated from DL: C Wilson Ramos

Tolleson, 25, batted .258/.343/.391 with 10 doubles and 20 stolen bases in 151 at-bats for New Britain.

New York Mets
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Fernando Nieve, OF Emil Brown
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Pat Misch
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Jose Sanchez, C Kai Gronauer, 2B Argenis Reyes, SS Reese Havens
Reinstated from DL: 2B Hector Pellot
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Junior Guerra

Havens, 22, sustained a quadriceps injury. After a fast start, he had cooled in May, batting .184/.336/.310 in 24 games for high Class A St. Lucie.

Misch joined the organization on a waiver claim from the Giants, who took him in the seventh round of the 2003 draft. The 27-year-old has appeared in the big leagues for San Francisco in every season since ’06.

New York Yankees
Signed:
RHP Jonathan Albaladejo, RHP Edwar Ramirez
Placed on restricted list: LHP Kai Liu
Placed on 7-day DL: C P.J. Pilittere, 1B Jorge Alberto Vazquez, 2B Abraham Almonte, 3B Carlos Mendoza
Reinstated from DL: RHP Alan Horne, 2B Kevin Russo, OF Ray Kruml
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Ivan Nova
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Sergio Mitre, RHP Ivan Nova, C Damian Taveras

Liu, a 21-year-old native of China, pitched for his nation’s World Baseball Classic team this spring. He gave up five runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings, with most of the damage coming at the hands of Korea, a WBC finalist.

Oakland Athletics
Recalled:
SS Gregorio Petit, OF Aaron Cunningham
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Vin Mazzaro
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Kevin Cameron, RHP Jeff Gray
Placed on 7-day DL: C Joel Galarraga
Reinstated from DL: RHP Jared Lansford, RHP Chris Schroder
Reinstated from inactive list: C Eric Munson

Though he doesn’t receive quite the fanfare heaped upon Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, the 22-year-old Mazzaro has shadowed that dynamic duo through the Athletics’ system. And now the ’05 third-round pick from Rutherford (N.J.) High has thrown 13 2/3 shutout innings to begin his big league career. Mazzaro challenges hitters with a low- to mid-90s sinker, which features tailing life, and a short, hard slider thrown in the high 80s.

Philadelphia Phillies
Released:
RHP Mike Koplove
Recalled: LHP Sergio Escalona
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Antonio Bastardo
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Sergio Escalona, OF John Mayberry Jr.
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Joe Bisenius, RHP Mike Cisco, SS Jorge Velandia
Reinstated from DL: RHP Robert Roth, RHP Sam Walls, LHP Jason Mackintosh, LHP Josh Shortslef

Bastardo, 23, carved up minor league competition at Double-A and Triple-A, whiffing 51 batters in 47 2/3 innings and posting a 1.89 ERA.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Traded:
OF Nate McLouth to Braves for RHP Charlie Morton, LHP Jeff Locke and OF Gorkys Hernandez
Recalled: RHP Steven Jackson
Added to 40-man roster: OF Andrew McCutchen
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Charlie Morton
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Randy Newsom

The trade of McLouth cleared the deck for McCutchen’s first promotion to the big leagues. The 22-year-old center fielder spent all of ’08 and ’09 with Triple-A Indianapolis, batting .291/.367/.424 in 201 games.

St. Louis Cardinals
Released:
RHP Tyler Herron
Placed on suspended list: RHP Shaun Garceau
Recalled: RHP Blake Hawksworth, SS Tyler Greene
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Jess Todd
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Jess Todd
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Fernando Salas
Reinstated from DL: RHP Eddie Degerman, RHP Elvis Hernandez, LHP Ian Ostlund, C Blake Murphy, C Brandon Yarbrough, SS Oliver Marmol
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Deryk Hooker, C Juan Castillo

A supplemental first-round pick in ’05, Herron had experienced an "overall dip in quality and command of his pitches."

San Diego Padres
Released:
RHP Derek McDaid, OF Josh Alley
Recalled: OF Will Venable
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Drew Macias
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Rob Musgrave
Reinstated from DL: C Adam Zornes, 3B Brian Joynt, SS Cole Figueroa, OF Peter Ciofrone
Reinstated from inactive list: 2B Rayner Contreras

In 200 at-bats for Triple-A Portland, Venable batted .260/.329/.520 with 12 home runs and 10 doubles. If the 26-year-old Princeton alum can put all facets of his game together at the same time—at various points he’s shown natural hitting ability, average power and solid speed—he’ll be able to hold down a starting gig.

San Francisco Giants
Designated for assignment:
LHP Pat Misch
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Kelvin Pichardo

Seattle Mariners
Released:
LHP Tyler Johnson
Option transferred: RHP Marwin Vega (Double-A to high Class A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Adam Harben, 3B Ronnie Prettyman, OF Mike Wilson
Reinstated from DL: RHP Ricky Orta, RHP Aaron Pribanic, 3B Leury Bonilla

Tampa Bay Rays
Signed:
OF Joe Gaetti
Recalled: OF Matt Joyce
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Dale Thayer
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Mitch Talbot
Reinstated from DL: RHP Shane Dyer, OF Chris Richard

With both Joyce and Edwin Jackson off to good starts, the trade consummated by the Rays and Tigers last offseason has been a win-win proposition to this point. Joyce, 24, batted .315/.408/.530 with five homers and 15 doubles in 41 games for Triple-A Durham.

Texas Rangers
Released:
RHP Paul Kometani
Recalled: OF Brandon Boggs

Placed on 7-day DL: C Doug Hogan, 2B German Duran, OF Dustin Majewski, OF David Paisano

Toronto Blue Jays
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Dirk Hayhurst
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Brian Wolfe
Reinstated from DL: 2B Kevin Howard, SS Chris Gutierrez
Placed on temporarily inactive list: C J.P. Arencibia
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Jonah Bayliss

Washington Nationals
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Adrian Alaniz, SS Dan Lyons, OF Mike Daniel
Reinstated from DL: LHP Ricardo Pecina

During the offseason you listed outfielder Damon Hollins as signed by the Philadelphia Phillies. I don’t see him on any of their minor league rosters. Is he still with the Phillies organization?

The Phillies released Hollins on March 29.

Did the Phillies make any international signings?
