Here we are more than a month into the minor league season, with Memorial Day fast approaching, and organizations have begun their first wave of prospect promotions. The majority of those below forced their way to a higher level by destroying A-ball competition through the first six weeks.
Red Sox
Promoted OF Ryan Kalish (2006, 9th round) to Double-A Portland. He leaves the Carolina League ranked third with a .434 on-base percentage.
White Sox
Promoted OF Jordan Danks (2008, 7th) to Double-A Birmingham, where he joins the organization’s other top position prospects, Brandon Allen, Gordon Beckham and Tyler Flowers.
Indians
Promoted 1B/OF Matt McBride (2006, supp. 2nd) to Double-A Akron. He led the Carolina League in average (.405), RBIs (36), hits (51), doubles (15), slugging (.667) and extra-base hits (21).
Tigers
Promoted RHP Brooks Brown (2006, supp. 1st) to Triple-A Toledo. Acquired from the Diamondbacks this spring as compensation for them keeping Rule 5 pick James Skelton, Brown surrendered no runs in three April starts.
Promoted LHP Matt Hoffman (2007, 26th round) to high Class A Lakeland after he led the Midwest League with a 1.12 ERA through seven games (three starts).
Astros
Promoted RHP Chia-Jen Lo, whom they signed out of Taiwan last October, to Double-A Corpus Chrisit. The 23-year-old compiled a nifty 36 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings in the California League, appearing in 12 games as a reliever and maintaining a nifty 2.13 ERA.
Twins
Promoted C Danny Rams (2007, 2nd) to high Class A Fort Myers with no experience in low Class A. He batted .228/.301/.423 last year in the Rookie-level Appalachian League, with 71 strikeouts in 149 at-bats (48 percent).
Mets
Promoted RHP Stephen Clyne (2007, 3rd) to Double-A Binghamton. He boasted a 3.29 G/F rate in the Florida State League, but his strikeout-to-walk ratio was just 10-to-6.
Yankees
Promoted RHP D.J. Mitchell (2008, 10th) to high Class A Tampa. He compiled a 1.95 ERA in six South Atlantic League starts.
Athletics
Promoted OF Matt Spencer (2007, 3rd) to Double-A Midland after he clubbed 10 home runs in the California League, ranking him second. Oakland acquired him at the 2008 trade deadline as part of the package for Joe Blanton.
Cardinals
Promoted 3B Brett Wallace (2008, 1st) to Triple-A Memphis, where he becomes the first first-rounder from last year’s draft to make it to that level. Through 88 minor league games, spent mostly at Double-A, he’s batted .317.417/.494.
Mariners
Promoted C Adam Moore (2006, 6th) to Triple-A Tacoma where he will take the place of C Jeff Clement, who hasn’t caught since May 6 and is dealing with a sore left knee.
RHP Steven Hensley (2008, 4th) to Double-A West Tenn. He tore through the Midwest League, posting a perfect 0.00 ERA through four games (three starts).
