DURHAM, N.C.—You’re not going to find a better batter-pitcher confrontation in the minor leagues all year than tonight, when Rays lefthander David Price starts for Durham and faces Norfolk catcher Matt Wieters.
We live blogged Wieters’ Triple-A debut yesterday on Opening Day, and we’ll do the same tonight in this post when the game begins at 7:05 p.m. You can follow along live with our updates with the box score and play-by-play. For Norfolk, 27-year-old lefthander Chris Waters gets the start.
Send any questions or comments in with your name and location in the comments section at the bottom, and I’ll try to answer them as the game is in progress.
3:37 pm: Rain is falling here in Durham and I’m being told the tarp is on the field at the park. If they play the game but it continues to rain, we might have to call off plans for live blogging the game from behind the plate, in which case we’ll give you guys a more detailed recap of the game tomorrow.
6:35 pm: I’ve been here at the ballpark for a couple hours now. The tarp has yet to come off the field, as the rain continues to fall and the forecast isn’t optimistic. I think they’ll end up playing after a rain delay, though I’m not certain how the Rays will proceed with Price given the rain situation here. Given that a laptop computer, rain and no roof above the seats behind home plate is a recipe for disaster, we’re going to call off the live blog tonight. We could give updates from the press box but, frankly, I’m guessing you guys are more interested in things we can see from behind the plate (pitch types, pitch sequences, velocities, etc.); from up here in the press box, these reports wouldn’t be much more than slightly glorified play-by-play. So instead, we’ll have staffers sitting behind the plate tonight with a more thourough report on the game when it’s over. So go out, enjoy your Friday night, and check back later for a report Baseball America style on a classic prospect shodown. Thanks for bearing with us.
6:57 pm: Just one more thing: given that we’re no longer blogging this game live, if you do have any questions specifically about the game or the players here, shoot us a message here in the comments box and we’ll do our best to track those things down for you guys.
10:18 pm: At this point, you probably already know. Price didn’t allow a run, a hit or a walk, and Wieters didn’t make a single out tonight. The game was also rained out, which means Price will start on Saturday against Norfolk at 5 p.m. That means two things: one, that Orioles righthander Chris Tillman probably won’t be making a start while he’s in town, which is disappointing for me, but more important, the live bloggingfrom behind the plate of Price-Wieters is back on for Saturday. See you here tomorrow at 5.
10:33 pm: P.S.: Apparently tonight was the first rainout for Durham in two and a half years, from what I just heard. Great timing, Mother Nature.

Have Wieters and Price ever faced each other before?
Posted by Matt | April 10, 2009 at 5:14 pm | ShortcutMatt, Matt Eddy put together a timeline of Wieters and Price. They did face each other in 2006 in a college regional matchup: http://www.baseballamerica.com.....67932.html
Posted by Ben Badler | April 10, 2009 at 5:34 pm | ShortcutWas any reason give as to why Bergesen was pulled having only gone 5 innings and 58 pitches?
Posted by Laura | April 10, 2009 at 5:46 pm | ShortcutLaura, I’m not 100 percent certain that the 58-pitch count is accurate; I think there might have been a few missing pitches in there that didn’t get tracked. My guess is he threw closer to 75 pitches, but I might be wrong and I’ll see what I can find out tonight. No worries with Bergesen in terms of health. At this point early in the season, teams keep their starters on a very tight leash with their pitch counts.
Posted by Ben Badler | April 10, 2009 at 5:53 pm | Shortcutdo you think Wieters and Price could both be up by the end of the month? Or as soon as possible (whenever they pass the Super 2 deadline). I know the Orioles can’t be losing anything by bringing him up, but the Rays are stacked and don’t necessarily need Price.
