Johhny,
His facts are straigh and yours are off.
His advisor did send a letter, with his Moms approval. For the record he graduated from Wentzville, Missouri Holt High School which is in St. Charles County Misoouri.

Patek,

First off, the kids' name is spelled Melville. Second, how do you know the contents of this so called "letter" that he sent to all of the major league teams? How do you even know he sent out a letter? Get your facts straight son.

Tim Mehlville grew up and pitched in St. Charles County, MO where I currently live. Tim had every intention of going to a D1 university and sent letters to every MLB team prior to the draft telling them of his intentions to attend college.

This led to his stock dropping among pro scouts. The Royals paid him above that which a fourth rounder would usually command. Mehlville was a first round projected coming out of Holt HS.

The Royals took a risk in drafting him but I don't believe the $$ are so outrageous taking into consideration he pre-draft status and the fact he (foolishly) sent out that letter.

I think it bespeaks well of the Royals current front office and scouting to take a flyer on this kid.

The article says that he was a fourth-round pick (second paragraph). That is correct. He would have been a late first-round pick if signability hadn't been an issue.

It's great to see a story about an 18-year old with such a level head on his shoulders.

Meville was not the 4th overall pick. he fell to the royals after the first round. i think he was a 2nd or 4th round pick.
