The Diamondbacks take James Skelton in an active first round, and the Marlins took lefthander Zack Kroenke, who made our pre-draft blog buzz. No huge surprises yet, other than Reegie Corona, who’s just a small surprise.
Here’s a new name: the Astros took Gilbert de la Vera out of the Royals organization. He’s a lefthander and the first guy I don’t know.

That’s my Astros! First off the reservation!
What can you tell us about this guy?
Posted by Glenn | December 11, 2008 at 1:52 pm | ShortcutI’m a Royals fan and I follow their minors some. De La Vara is your basic set-up lefty. He has decent stuff – 1.18 career minor league WHIP, keeps the ball inthe park, and around 8 Ks per 9 innings – but he’s been a little old for the league during his minor league progression (didn’t make it to rookie ball in the U.S. until age 20). Not sure about his splits to know whether he’s more set-up or loogy material. He has a chance to stick, IMO.
