Chicago White Sox
Traded: RHP Javier Vazquez and LHP Boone Logan to Braves for LHP Santos Rodriguez, C Tyler Flowers, 3B Jon Gilmore and SS Brent Lillibridge
Signed: OF Darnell McDonald
McDonald, a former top prospect for the Orioles, has settled into a life as a journeyman Triple-A outfielder. For someone with the role, the Reds are a good organization to land with right now, as the team has openings in left and center field. McDonald, 30, won’t be the first option at either, but if injuries crop up, Jerry Hairston Jr., showed last year that the Reds are willing to give a journeyman a chance if he’s swinging a hot bat.
Signed: RHP Adalberto Mendez, 1B Matt Craig
Kansas City Royals
Signed: 2B Jonathan Baez
Los Angeles Dodgers
Signed: RHP Henry Bonilla, 3B Hector Luna
Signed: OF Juan Barrini
New York Yankees
Signed: RHP Jose Valdez, C Ben Blumenthal, 3B Carlos Mendoza, OF Justin Leone
Signed: RHP Jerome Williams
The 39th overall pick in 1999, Williams seemed destined for great things as a Giants farmhand, just like Kurt Ainsworth and Jesse Foppert. But the trio is better known today as another cautionary tale about the unpredictability of pitching prospects. Williams, 27, pitched in the independent Golden League at the beginning of the 2008 season, before latching on with the Dodgers in June. He appeared in 10 games for Triple-A Las Vegas, compiling 21 strikeouts, nine walks and two home runs in 26 innings. He’s pitching in the Puerto Rican League now, where his record stands at 1-3, 5.04 in six starts, with 14-8 K-BB in 30 1/3 innings.
Signed: RHP Brian Slocum
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Jason Davis, C Raul Chavez
Signed: LHP Chris Seddon, C Luis Oliveros, 1B Chris Shelton
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP R.A. Dickey, RHP Sean White
Without a firm first base option in place, the Mariners added to their options in signing Shelton, who in 300 games at Triple-A has compiled a .299/.395/.478 line. A righthanded batter, he’ll be in the running with lefty batters Russell Branyan and Bryan LaHair for first-base at-bats. Shelton, 28, hasn’t garnered much big league playing time since coming down from a hot April 2006, when he hit 10 home runs.
Tampa Bay Rays
Signed: RHP Jason Childers, RHP Jeremy Cummings, RHP Paul Phillips, 1B Chris Richard
Richard turned in his finest season in 2008, batting .293/.375/.546 with 26 home runs for Triple-A Durham. The 34-year-old veteran was a big reason for the Bulls’ run to the International League finals.
