This week’s installment considers all transactions reported by MLB between Nov. 8-18. The previous installment is available here.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Granted free agency: RHP Edgar Gonzalez
Gonzalez debuted with the Diamondbacks at age 20 in 2003, but he never did establish himself in a regular role in six seasons. His peak season in terms of usage was 2007, when went 8-4, 5.03 in 102 innings as a spot starter for Arizona’s NL West-winning club. It’s probably the role he’s best suited for, seeing as he has four average pitches and has proven to be durable, if not overpowering. Gonzalez will be 26 next season, but he missed much of the second half of 2008 with an elbow strain.
Atlanta Braves
Released: RHP Rodrigo Lopez
Baltimore Orioles
Signed: LHP Dan Smith (Southern Maryland (Atlantic))
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Brad Bergesen, RHP David Hernandez, RHP Chorye Spoone, LHP Wilfrido Perez, OF Nolan Reimold
Baltimore added to its 40-man roster five members of its excellent Double-A Bowie club, a team that posted the second-best winning percentage (.592) in the Eastern League. Bergesen (2004, HS, 4th round) and Hernandez (2005, JC, 16th round) helped lead a deep pitching staff, while Reimold (2005, college, 2nd round) batted .284/.367/.501 to help lead the offense. Spoone (2005, JC, 8th round) made nine starts for the Baysox, as he contended with shoulder soreness, and Perez (2003, Dominican Republic) joined the club on July 9.
Chicago Cubs
Released: RHP Eric Allen, RHP Kitt Kopach, RHP Jon Mueller, LHP Zach Ashwood, OF Leon Johnson
Traded: RHP Jose Ceda to Marlins for RHP Kevin Gregg
Chicago White Sox
Traded: RHP Kanekoa Texeira and OF Nick Swisher to Yankees for RHP Jeffrey Marquez, RHP Jhonny Nunez and 3B Wilson Betemit
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Mike MacDougal
Detroit Tigers
Released: 2B Scott Tousa
Reinstated from inactive list: 2B Scott Tousa
Florida Marlins
Traded: RHP Kevin Gregg to Cubs for RHP Jose Ceda
Traded: LHP Scott Olsen and OF Josh Willingham to Nationals for RHP P.J. Dean, 2B Emilio Bonifacio and 2B Jake Smolinski
Kansas City Royals
Signed: RHP Federico Castaneda, RHP Sergio Rosario
Released: OF O.D. Gonzalez
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Brandon Duckworth
The 24-year-old Castaneda, a five-year veteran of the Mexican League, went 4-1, 4.28 in 58 games for Laguna in 2008. He struck out 46 and walked 22 in 54 2/3 innings.
Los Angeles Angels
Released: RHP Pedro Herrera, RHP Robin Molina, OF Anderson Rosario
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Anthony Ortega, 1B Mark Trumbo
The 23-year-old Ortega (2003, Venezuela) went 14-7, 3.46 in 28 starts for Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Salt Lake. He tossed 174 innings, striking out 105 and walking 55, one year after compiling 163 innings in the California League. Ortega has a good sinking fastball and a plus changeup, but command has been an issue. Trumbo (2004, HS, 18th round) hit .281/.325/.540 and clubbed 32 home runs to lead all Angels farmhands. It was an impressive feat, considering he combined to hit 27 in two years at low Class A Cedar Rapids in 2006 and 2007.
Milwaukee Brewers
Released: RHP E.J. Shanks, 1B Curt Rindal
New York Yankees
Traded: RHP Jeffrey Marquez, RHP Jhonny Nunez and 3B Wilson Betemit to White Sox for RHP Kanekoa Texeira and OF Nick Swisher
Philadelphia Phillies
Removed from 40-man roster: 2B Tadahito Iguchi
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: C Tuffy Gosewisch

Seattle Mariners
Released: RHP Joe Kantakevich, LHP Dustin Birosak, SS Alex Meneses
Granted free agency: LHP Jake Woods
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Jared Wells, RHP Joe Woerman, LHP Jake Woods
Texas Rangers
Released: LHP Yukinaga Maeda
Washington Nationals
Traded: RHP P.J. Dean, 2B Emilio Bonifacio and 2B Jake Smolinski to Marlins for LHP Scott Olsen and OF Josh Willingham
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Luis Atilano, SS Ian Desmond, OF Leonard Davis
Davis is the fun 40-man addition here. An eight-round pick from Fresno CC in 2004, he whacked a system-best 25 home runs this season in batting .310/.365/.567 on his way to Triple-A. The 24-year-old had spent the previous four seasons at A-ball and below. Slick-fielding Desmond (2004, HS, 3rd round) has batted just .247/.312/.373 in his five-year career, but no such concerns exist about his glove. Both Davis and Desmond were part of the Expos’ final draft class in 2004. Atilano (2003, HS, 1st round supplemental) came to the organization from the Braves in the August 2006 trade for Daryle Ward.
