This week’s installment considers all transactions reported by MLB between Nov. 1-7. The previous installment is available here.
Minor league free agents are here.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Released: RHP Dustin Glant, RHP Brett Reynolds
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Edgar Gonzalez, OF Javier Brito
Atlanta Braves
Signed: RHP Moises Hernandez, C J.C. Boscan, C Jose Camarena, OF Joe Borchard, OF Reid Gorecki
Hernandez, who will be 25 next season, spent all of 2008 on the disabled list. He’s notable here because he was the player the Orioles surrendered as compensation for signing pitching coach Leo Mazzone from the Braves in November 2005. Moises is the older brother of Mariners righthander Felix Hernandez.
Baltimore Orioles
Signed: LHP Alberto Castillo, 2B Carlos Rojas, 3B Jeff Nettles
Removed from 40-man roster: LHP Alberto Castillo
Boston Red Sox
Reinstated from inactive list: SS Zach Borowiak
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Eammon Portice
Chicago Cubs
Traded: RHP Matt Avery to Nationals for LHP Ryan Buchter
Chicago White Sox
Signed: SS Javier Castillo, OF Jordan Herr (Lancaster (Atlantic))
Herr, the son of longtime Cardinals second baseman Tom Herr, signed with Lancaster in 2008 after completing his senior year at Pittsburgh and going undrafted. The Cubs took him in the 41st round of the 2007 draft but he opted not to sign. Jordan Herr, whose older brother Aaron is a minor league free agent, batted .202 with six doubles and four homers in 36 games for Lancaster.
Cincinnati Reds
Signed: C Ben Davis (Camden (Atlantic)), 2B Luis Bolivar
Released: RHP Hugo Calderon, RHP Tyler Rhoden, C Frank Meade, 1B Eli Rimes, 3B Brett Bartles, OF Anthony Gressick
Removed from 40-man roster: LHP Bobby Livingston
Davis, the second overall pick in 1995, latched on with Camden after the Orioles released him in June. The switch-hitting catcher, who will be 32 next season, has logged 486 games in the big leagues and 686 more in the minors, where he’s a career .256/.316/.404 hitter.
Cleveland Indians
Signed: LHP Jose Rodriguez, C Armando Camacaro
This is Jose Ilich Rodriguez, 33, who last pitched in affiliated ball in 2005, while a member of the Marlins organization. He pitched for Newark of the Atlantic League in 2007, but he logged just 3 1/3 innings.
Colorado Rockies
Signed: SS Kenny Perez
Released: RHP Yull Silano
Houston Astros
Signed: LHP Andy Van Hekken
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Paul Estrada, 1B Mark Saccomanno
Kansas City Royals
Added to 40-man roster: C Brayan Pena
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Yasuhiko Yabuta, C Mat Tupman
Both Yabuta (40 innings) and the Rangers’ Japanese reliever import, Kazuo Fukumori (64 innings), spent significant time in Triple-A in 2008. In fact, Indians righthander Masahide Kobayashi was the only one of the trio of Japanese relievers from the class of 2008 to make it through the entire season as a member of a 40-man roster. He went 4-5, 4.53 for the Indians, racking up six saves and striking out 35 in 56 innings.
Milwaukee Brewers
Released: RHP Scott Cassidy, RHP Jose Garcia, RHP Shane Hill, RHP Jason Karnuth, RHP Travis Wendte, LHP Luis Ramirez, C Matt Czimskey, C D.J. Neyens, C Carlos Pena, C Ulrich Snijders, 1B Ned Yost, SS Luis Sanchez, OF Scott Houin, OF Nelson Montes
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Scott Cassidy, RHP Jason Karnuth, LHP Luis Ramirez, C Matt Czimskey, C David Neyens, OF Nelson Montes
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: SS Brent Brewer
From our Brewers correspondent Tom Haudricourt: Brewer replaces third baseman Taylor Green, who suffered a broken nose when struck by a bad-hop grounder. A few days earlier, Green had been hit in the face with a pitch that deflected off the side of his batting helmet.
Minnesota Twins
Granted free agency: C Ryan Jorgensen
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Armando Gabino
The 25-year-old Gabino signed with the Indians in April 2001 out of the Dominican Republic and joined the Twins in the 2004 minor league Rule 5 draft. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound converted third baseman touches 95 mph with a quality slider, prompting the Twins to add him to the 40-man roster.
New York Mets
Signed: LHP Edgar Alfonzo, LHP Adam Bostick, OF Jesus Feliciano
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Eddie Kunz, RHP Bobby Parnell, RHP Tobi Stoner, LHP Jason Vargas, 3B Shawn Bowman, OF Daniel Murphy
Assigned to Hawaii Winter Baseball: RHP Junior Guerra, RHP Scott Shaw, RHP Josh Stinson, LHP Roy Merritt, C Jordan Abruzzo, 2B Greg Veloz, SS Ruben Tejada
New York Yankees

Oakland Athletics
Released: RHP Brent Lysander, RHP David Samuel, RHP Edgar Tejeda, LHP Branden Dewing, LHP Fabian Gomez, C Julio Rivera, SS Wilson Mercedes, SS Yunior Rodriguez, SS Francisco Tirado, OF Mike Lissman
Philadelphia Phillies
Signed: LHP Jason Mackintosh, OF Kevin Mahar, OF Rich Thompson
Removed from 40-man roster: 1B Andy Tracy, 3B Mike Cervenak
Pittsburgh Pirates
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Evan Meek
San Diego Padres
Signed: LHP Philip Barzilla
Seattle Mariners
Signed: RHP Denny Stark, 1B Ian Bladergroen (Lancaster (Atlantic)), SS Oswaldo Navarro, OF Steve Moss (Long Beach (Golden)), OF Prentice Redman
Added to 40-man roster: OF Michael Wilson
The Mariners brought a couple indy league players back to affiliated ball. The 25-year-old Bladergroen, a Mets draft-and-follow from 2002 who joined the Red Sox in 2005 in a trade for Doug Mientkiewicz, batted .260 with 15 home runs in 89 games for Lancaster this season. It was his second year in the Atlantic League after he washed out of affiliated ball in May 2007 with a wrist injury. Moss, who last played affiliated ball for the Brewers in 2007, rejoins former Milwaukee scouting director (and new Mariners GM) Jack Zduriencik in Seattle. Zduriencik drafted Moss, now 24, in the 29th round in 2002. Moss batted .299 with 10 home runs in 68 games for Long Beach.
Tampa Bay Rays
Released: RHP Josh Johnson, RHP Jason Ragan, LHP Brian Henderson, 2B Seth Dhaenens, 3B Jeff Carroll, OF Jason Appel, OF Garrett Groce
Granted free agency: C Michel Hernandez
Removed from 40-man roster: C Michel Hernandez
Texas Rangers
Signed: RHP Kendy Batista, RHP Kazuo Fukumori
Toronto Blue Jays
Signed: RHP Marty McLeary
Released: RHP Brian Pettway
The Blue Jays drafted Pettway as a corner outfielder/reliever out of Mississippi in the third round of the 2005 draft, but his bat never developed. He batted .243/.321/.436 in three seasons as a position player, peaking at low Class A Lansing. He converted to a righthanded reliever in 2008.
Washington Nationals
Signed: OF Ryan Langerhans
Traded: LHP Ryan Buchter to Cubs for RHP Matt Avery
Removed from 40-man roster: 1B Dmitri Young
Young’s removal from the 40-man was a bit startling seeing as he’s due $5 million in 2009. That salary ranks him among the Nationals’ highest paid players for 2009, with Nick Johnson, Austin Kearns and Cristian Guzman.

Wait…Ryan Langerhans resigned with the Nats? I haven’t seen that anywhere else.
Posted by Hoagie | November 17, 2008 at 11:47 pm | ShortcutA question involving Mexican RHP Edgar Gonzalez: He was removed from Arizona 40-men Roster but didn’t figure into the FAs List. He signed out of Mexico in 2000, so he has 7 years on service time to become free agent. Has he signed with the D’backs after was removed?
