One more big bat that I believe is a free agent is the Giants' Dan Ortmeier. He is still listed on their AAA roster, but he is a 6 year free agent, with parts of three years in the bigs. He is a low risk, switch hitting speedster, that has taken the Big Unit, among others, downtown.

What ever happened to Thomas Collaro. I believe his last team was the Colorado lookouts as a free agent.

Todd, that' for you.
1. When a player signs his first professional contract usually it's for seven season. If he's released prior of the 7th season or become a 6-year free agent, it's up to the new team decide if the signing of the player is for one or plus seasons (till the 7th season). Usually the new contract is for one season.
2. indy seasons don't count against minor league service time.

I get the six year free agents...but a couple of additional questions....

1. Are undrafted free agents or any other free agents (non six year fa's) signed for one year at a time, or does the signing team have control over the players up through six years?

2. Does independent ball count toward six year fa's?

thanks for any answers

Jimmy, Six years only applies if it is your original organization. If you were previously released by another organization and sign on with a new one, you are a free agent whenever that particular contract expires. All of the players with less than six years' experience on this list are no longer with their original organization.

The first sentence states that 561 players were declared free agents on Nov 6. That implies that they were categorized as such due to their service time. This group was once called "6-year free agents". My question for Matt (or anyone else who know for sure) is whether this list exclusively contains only those players or is meant to also include players released during this time period. Thanks.

Jimmy, that's the right answer to your question:
the young dominican and venezuelan players on this list are free agent, prior of the 6-full season of minor league service time, because they were released at some poit from their original clubs. For example: RHP Tony Bremon signed with Seattle in 2004, but the Mariners cut ties with him after the 2007 season. Then he signed with Chicago after hitting free-agency: when it occurs, a player is declared free-agent after every subsequent season. So you can read the name of Bremon as a F.A. with only 4 years of service time.

Thank you so much for compiling this list...I have already referred to it a TON and will keep it on hand all winter. It's scary to me how many of these guys were recently in the Majors with my Royals.

Jimmy, you asked why players released are on the list. Simple, when you are released you are not owned by any team and thus a Free Agent. The above list is a Free Agent list.

Can someone explain how these young DSL and VSL players wind up on this free agent list? If they were released, they shouldn't appear on this list, correct?

I don't understand getting rid of Claudio Vargas.

He didn't embarrass himself as a spot starter, and held righties to a .566 OPS
