AFL Dish: Davis Delivers

Prospect Of The Day

Peoria Saguaros DH Leonard Davis (Nationals) has logged a lot of miles this year.

The Nationals’ eighth-round pick in 2004 out of Fresno Community College, Davis split his season between three different teams—Potomac, Harrisburg and Columbus. Although he struggled in Triple A, his final line was a solid .308/.364/.566 over 438 at-bats with 28 doubles and 25 home runs.

Now Davis is in the AFL and yesterday he went 2-for-5 with a double and a home run to help the Saguaros beat the Phoenix Desert Dogs, 14-8.

The performance isn’t an anomaly for Davis, who has been stinging the ball this fall. Over 73 AFL at-bats, he’s hitting .342/.430/.630 with five doubles, two triples, four home runs and two stolen bases.

Other Notable Performances

Davis wasn’t the only Saguaros hitter swinging a hot stick yesterday. Peoria Saguaros catcher Cole Armstrong (White Sox) went 3-for-6 with his seventh home run of the fall. Armstrong, the White Sox’ ninth-best prospect, is now hitting .341/.400/.626 over 91 at-bats this fall. . . Peoria Saguaros right fielder Mike Baxter (Padres) went 3-for-6 with a double and four RBIs. . . A pair of Phillies’ prospects provided most of the offense for Mesa as the Solar Sox topped the Peoria Javelinas, 10-4. Mesa second baseman Jason Donald (Phillies) went 1-for-4 with a home run, his fifth of the fall, and Mesa DH Lou Marson (Phillies) went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Donald is now hitting .414/.480/.759 this fall. . . Scottsdale shortstop Kevin Frandsen (Giants) went 1-for-3 with a double, knocking the Scorpions’ only extra-base hit in a rare, 1-0 victory. The 1-0 game was the first of the AFL this season. . . With the AFL championship game scheduled for Nov. 22, the Peoria Saguaros and Mesa Solar Sox are in good shape with records of 25-11.

I cann’t understand why the media emphasizes the scores for these AFL games–Who cares who wins or loses—What we are interested in is how our team’s prospects are doing. Like the man said– it’s nice to know how the other teams are doing–but what I want to know is what did MY team do today??? John Brown
