Prospect Of The Day
Peoria Saguaros righthander Cesar Carrillo (Padres) hasn’t lived up to expectations since being the 18th-overall pick in the 2005 draft. Carrillo, who was drafted out of the University of Miami, missed most of 2006 and 2007 because of Tommy John surgery and spent all of 2008 pitching in the high Class A California League. Shaking off the rust, Carrillo went 3-5, 5.97 over 57 1/3 innings with 33 walks and 32 strikeouts.
Yesterday, however, he was nearly perfect. Carrillo threw two innings for the Saguaros and recorded every out with a K. He did allow a hit, but struck out six over the two frames. During his time in the Arizona Fall League, Carrillo has now thrown nine innings, maintaining a 3.00 ERA with 12 strikeouts and three walks.
Other Notable Performances
Carrillo’s innings were about the only time players weren’t circling the bases in that game, as the Saguaros topped Mesa, 13-12, by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Saguaros center fielder Shane Robinson (Cardinals) had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-6 with three doubles. His teammate, DH Brett Wallace (Cardinals) continued to pound the ball as well. He went 1-for-4 with a home run, his fourth of the fall. Saguaros second baseman Daniel Murphy (Mets) went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run. . . Solar Sox first baseman Logan Morrison (Marlins) had a good day as well. Morrison went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run. He’s hitting .452/.452/.790. He’s obviously hitting well, but hasn’t drawn one walk over his 15 games in Arizona. . . Phoenix catcher John Hester (Diamondbacks) went 2-for-3 with a home run as the Desert Dogs edged the Surprise Rafters, 5-2. . . Scottsdale left fielder Chris Pettit (Angels) went 3-for-5 with his league-leading ninth double of the fall. He also stole three bases in the game, as the Rafters knocked off the Peoria Javelinas, 9-3.
