Prospect Of The Day
Scottsdale second baseman Emmanuel Burriss (Giants) doesn’t typically hit home runs. In fact, he has one career minor-league home run and one career major-league home run.
Now, he has one home run in the Arizona Fall League.
Burriss went 4-for-6 last night with the home run as the Scorpions stung the Surprise Rafters, 14-4.
The Giants’ supplemental first-round pick in 2006 out of Kent State, Burriss zipped through the minor leagues, skipping Double A altogether and playing only 14 games in Triple A before finding himself in the big leagues last season.
He held his own, hitting .283/.357/.329 over 240 at-bats. He also stole 13 bases.
In Arizona, Burriss is hitting .352/.403/.423 over 71 at-bats with seven stolen bases.
Other Notable Performances
Surprise third baseman Brandon Snyder (Orioles) went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run in the loss. . . Phoenix’s offense was led by a pair of Rockies players, catcher Mike McKenry and second baseman Chris Nelson. Both went 1-for-4, but it was about the quality, not the quantity. In the seventh inning, McKenry launched his league-leading ninth home run of the fall, sparking a rally that tied the game at five apiece. In the bottom of the eighth, Nelson hit a home run of his own to put the Desert Dogs on top and lead them to a 6-5 victory. . . Peoria Saguaros second baseman Gordon Beckham (White Sox) went 3-for-4 with a double. Beckham is now hitting .396/.484/.642 over 53 at-bats this fall. . . Mesa right fielder Casper Wells (Tigers) entered the game as a pinch runner, but it was his bat that made the difference in this game. In the ninth inning, with his team up by one run, Wells put the nail in the coffin with a three-run home run. The Solar Sox defeated the Peoria Javelinas, 8-4. For Wells, it was his second consecutive game with a home run and his third in the past five games. . . Peoria Javelinas center fielder Austin Jackson (Yankees) went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
