Granted free agency: 2B Jayson Nix
Both Nix brothers are free to seek employment with whichever organization they choose. Both Jayson and Laynce are free agents. Jayson Nix, 26, who stumbled and fell as the Rockies’ Opening Day second baseman this season, batting .125/.234/.161 in a sparse 56 at-bats and ceding the everyday job to the three-headed monster of Clint Barmes, Jeff Baker and Omar Quintanilla. Jonathan Herrera and Ian Stewart also figured into that equation. A Rockies’ supplemental first-round pick in 2001 from Midland (Texas) High, Nix batted .281/.342/.439 in his three years with Triple-A Colorado Springs, covering 1,061 at-bats. He’s better known for his strong glove work and for helping Team USA win the bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics.
Laynce Nix, 27, finished his second season with Triple-A Nashville (Brewers) in 2008. A Rangers’ fourth-round pick in 2000—also from Midland High—he has compiled .285/.346/.533 averages in 1,117 at-bats as a Triple-A center/right fielder.
Signed: C Charlie Lisk (Gateway (Frontier))
Released: LHP Zach Piccola
Fresh off signing top indy leagues prospect Mike LaLuna, the Tigers have inked Lisk, a two-time Frontier League all-star. The 25-year-old backstop batted .313 with 12 doubles, 24 home runs and 64 RBIs for the Gateway Grizzlies. He finished the season tied for second in the FL in home runs and was fourth in the league with a .583 slugging percentage. Lisk was originally a 24th-round pick of the White Sox in 2001 out of a South Carolina high school and signed for $390,000.

Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Tyson Brummett, RHP Andrew Carpenter, RHP Pat Overholt, C Lou Marson, OF Quintin Berry, OF Jeremy Slayden
Assigned to Hawaii Winter Baseball: RHP Chris Kissock, OF Domonic Brown, OF Michael Taylor
The Mariners signed both Blackley (2000) and Snelling (1999) from Australia on the watch of former general manager Pat Gillick. Each made his way to the Phillies organization in 2008, where Gillick now presides. Despite their talent, both Australians have been derailed by injuries throughout their careers, neither earning much more than cups of coffee in the big leagues. Blackley (a major league Rule 5 pick last December) missed the 2005 season after surgery to repair tears in his labrum; Snelling (acquired in a cash transaction last November) never has missed an entire season, but you have to combine three seasons to rack up even 140 games played.
Granted free agency: RHP Franquelis Osoria
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Derek Hankins
San Francisco Giants
Granted free agency: RHP Kevin Correia, RHP Tyler Walker, 3B Scott McClain, SS Ivan Ochoa
At least McClain, who has hit 287 minor league home runs, got a big league homer (two, in fact) before the Giants let him go.
Tampa Bay Rays
Signed: RHP Nelson Liriano, RHP Elvin Perez
Granted free agency: SS Jorge Velandia

Chacin, who signed with Toronto in 1998 out of Venezuela, set a Blue Jays franchise rookie record by making 34 starts in 2005. He made a combined 22 starts in 2006 and 2007, and none in 2008 as he missed the entire year with a shoulder injury, signaling the end of his time with the organization.
