Buchholz struck out three and walked one in three AFL innings his first time out. He’s working on fastball command after a schizophrenic regular season that included success in the minors (2.30 ERA and 3.4 K/BB in 11 starts) and something less than that in the majors (6.75 ERA and 1.8 K/BB in 15 starts).

The Tigers went on an indy binge, signing three players from the non-affiliated ranks. LaLuna, 22, ranked as the No. 1 prospect in independent baseball this year, and with 94-mph heat coming out of the pen, he could have a future as a set-up man. LaLuna went undrafted out of college because he was a shortstop with a good arm and a bad bat. As a pitcher, he’s shown he’s a quick study. Torbert ranked as a second-team independent leagues all-star. The Tigers

San Diego Padres
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Kevin Cameron, RHP Tim Stauffer, C Luke Carlin, 2B Craig Stansberry, SS Sean Kazmar
The Padres used the fourth overall pick of the 2003 draft on Stauffer, but he just hasn’t been the same pitcher as a pro that he was as an amateur at Richmond. A sore shoulder was the culprit then, as it dramatically reduced his velocity and life on his pitches, and again in 2008, forcing him to miss the entire season with a torn right labrum. He’s been excised from the 40-man now that he has no minor league options remaining. Looking back on Stauffer’s Padres career, he earned a 15-game trial with the 2005 club, but he went just 3-6, 5.33 in 81 innings and received just three combined big league starts in 2006 and 2007. Had he been healthy, he probably would have been given a look this summer as the Padres sorted through a multitude of starting pitcher candidates, from Cha Seung Baek to Josh Banks to Justin Germano to Shawn Estes to Wil Ledezma.
San Francisco Giants
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Kevin Correia, RHP Brad Hennessey, RHP Tyler Walker, LHP Geno Espineli, C Eliezer Alfonzo, 3B Scott McClain, SS Ivan Ochoa
Signed: LHP Eddy Hernandez, 2B Ron Garth, 3B Leury Bonilla
Tampa Bay Rays
Granted free agency: RHP Scott Dohmann
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: OF Desmond Jennings
Jennings is in Arizona as a taxi squad player, which limits the games in which he can appear to Wednesday and Sunday. He missed the bulk of the season after having left shoulder surgery 24 games into the season. Jennings was hobbled with a back injury coming out of spring training.
Granted free agency: 1B Chris Shelton
Toronto Blue Jays
Released: SS Jason Armstrong
Granted free agency: SS Hector Luna
Removed from 40-man roster: 2B Kevin Melillo
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Zach Dials, RHP Kyle Ginley, RHP Mike MacDonald, LHP Daryl Harang, C J.P. Arencibia, 2B Scott Campbell, OF Ryan Patterson
Assigned to Hawaii Winter Baseball: 2B Brad Emaus, OF Eric Eiland
Emaus, an 11th-round pick from Tulane in 2007, came to pro ball hampered with an ankle injury, but he rebounded in a big way in the Florida State League this season, batting .302/.380/.463 with 12 home runs, 34 doubles and a walk-to-strikeout ratio of 60-to-56. The 22-year-old was batting .379/.500/.586 through his first 29 at-bats in Hawaii while playing first, second and third base.
