Jays Claim Hayhurst

First, Dirk Hayhurst went from Non-Prospect to Major Leaguer, as the San Diego Padres promoted him to the majors in late August. Now, Hayhurst is no longer a Padre.

The BA online diarist and righthander was claimed off waivers Monday by the Blue Jays, who placed infielder Kevin Melillo on waivers to make room for Hayhurst on the 40-man roster. (Check out Dirk’s BA diaries here, and his latest blog at his hometown paper, the Canton Repository, is available here.)

Hayhurst, 27, had his best season as a pro in 2008, going 2-3, 3.75 for Triple-A Portland while striking out 98 in 84 innings while walking just 28. While he made jsut two starts in Triple-A, Hayhurst joined the Padres as a starter and struggled, going 0-2, 9.72 in 10 big league appearances (three starts). The eighth-round pick out of Kent State in 2008 is 32-33, 4.05 in his minor league career.

Love the non-prospect diary. Hope Dirk can continue even though he is not really a non-prospect anymore.
