Prospect of the Day
This year was a breakout season for first baseman Logan Morrison in the Marlins’ system. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder was the Marlins’ 22nd-round draft pick in 2005 and then signed as a draft-and-follow after spending a year at Maple Woods (Mo.) Community College in suburban Kansas City. Morrison hit .332/.402/.494 this year in the high Class A Florida State League with 38 doubles and 13 home runs. He’s continued his hard hitting in the Arizona Fall League for Mesa. On Wednesday, Morrison went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs, but the Solar Sox fell to the Phoenix Desert Dogs, 7-5.
Other notable performances
Catcher J.P. Arencibia (Blue Jays) went 1-for-4 with a home run for the Desert Dogs. Arencibia hit 27 home runs in the regular season between Dunedin and New Hampshire. . . Desert Dogs designated hitter Dustin Martin (Twins) went 2-for-3 with a double. Martin came to the Twins from the Mets in the Luis Castillo trade and hit .290/.355/.447 for the New Britain Rock Cats. . . Peoria Saguaros shortstop Gordon Beckham (White Sox) made his AFL debut yesterday, going 1-for-3 with a walk. Beckham was the eighth overall pick in this year’s draft. His AFL teammate, right fielder Mike Baxter (Padres), went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs as the Saguaros defeated the Scottsdale Scorpions, 10-7. . . Peoria Javelinas shortstop Chris Valaika (Reds) went 2-for-4 with a double as his team held on to defeat the Surprise Rafters, 8-7. . . The pitching performance of the day, however, came in Surprise’s losing effort. Righthander Josh Tomlin (Indians) threw three scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five. Tomlin was the Indians’ 19th-round draft pick in 2006 out of Texas Tech and in 109 innings this year, mostly in Kinston, Tomlin struck out 112 batters and walked only 17.
