Prospect Of The Day
Ogden designated hitter Tony Delmonico (Dodgers) went 1-for-4 with his 10th home run of the season. The effort wasn’t enough, however, as Ogden fell to Orem, 13-4. Delmonico was the Dodgers’ sixth-round draft pick out of Florida State. Normally a second baseman, he’s hitting .333/.438/.705 over his first 129 professional at-bats.
Over the weekend, Elizabethton (Twins) finished off their sweep of Pulaski (Mariners) for their second-straight Appalachian League championship. Starter Dan Osterbrock (Twins) worked around 9 hits, but didn’t give up a run and struck out 11 for the win. . . In the Arizona League championship game, the AZL Giants defeated the AZL Angels, 4-2. Center fielder Wendell Fairley went 1-for-3 with two walks and first baseman Craig Ziegler went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the fourth inning. . . The GCL Phillies battled back after losing the first game of the GCL championship series last Friday by taking back-to-back games from the GCL Nationals for the title. Rain on Saturday forced the doubleheader and the Phillies won the first game, 5-4 and then took the second game 9-0 in seven innings. Third baseman Yonderman Rodriguez (Phillies) was hot in the series, going 5-for-7 with a triple and two RBIs over the final two games. . . Still in regular-season play in the Pioneer League, Idaho Falls pitchers combined to one-hit the Casper Ghosts yesterday. Starter Colby Beach threw six innings, giving up the only hit — a single to Casper center fielder Delta Cleary (Rockies). Lefthanders Tim Huber and Blaine Hardy and righthander James Thompson all came out of Idaho Falls’ (Royals) bullpen and struck out one hitter apiece. Their teammates, shortstop J.D. Alfaro and catcher Salvador Perez provided the offense and Idaho Falls won, 10-0. Alfaro went 1-for-4 with his 21st double. Perez, an 18-year-old from Venezuela, went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Between the Appalachian League and the Pioneer League, he’s hitting .356/.415/.493 over 73 at-bats this season.
What To Watch For Today
A trio of good pitchers will get the ball in the Pioneer League tonight. Teammates Dexter Carter and Dan Hudson will be on the mound for Great Falls (White Sox) as the Voyagers play a doubleheader against Billings (Reds). Lefthander Will Smith (Angels) will also get the start against Ogden (Dodgers).
