The Marlins rewarded the core players of their Double-A Carolina playoff team by calling them up after the Mudcats were knocked out of the Southern League playoffs by Mississippi. Sanchez, 24, won SL MVP honors by batting .314/.404/.513 with 17 home runs in 478 at-bats. But it’s the 21-year-old Maybin, who batted .277/.375/.456 for Carolina, who made the most noise in the big leagues. He tied the Marlins’ franchise record by reaching base in 10 consecutive plate appearances.

The Yankees joined the 1993 Astros in having both their Double-A and Triple-A affiliates win league titles in the same season. (Houston did it with Triple-A Tucson and Double-A Jackson.) Trenton dispatched with Akron in four games to win the Eastern League, and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre won the International League’s Governor’s Cup by besting Durham in four games. Naturally, most of the Yankees’ September callups came from the Triple-A level, though slick backstop Cervelli batted .315/.432/.384 in 21 games for the Thunder.

Buck, Denorfia and Gonzalez served as the principal outfielders for Triple-A Sacramento as the River Cats steamrolled through the Pacific Coast League playoffs, going 6-2 and winning their second straight league crown. Ever the Buck apologist, I present Buck’s September performance, after he returned from a concussion: He hit .313/.368/.469 with a homer, two doubles and eight runs scored in 32 playoff at-bats. Gonzalez (.406/.486/.625 with two homers in 32 at-bats) and Denorfia (.486/.526/.886 with four homers in 35 at-bats) also played exceedingly well in the postseason.
