Minor League Transactions

This week’s installment considers all transactions reported by MLB between Sept. 6 and Sept. 12. The previous installment is available here.

Atlanta Braves
Reinstated from DL:
OF Reid Gorecki

Baltimore Orioles
Released:
RHP Scott Chiasson
Recalled: SS Brandon Fahey
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Brian Bass, RHP Alfredo Simon, C Omir Santos
Designated for assignment: 2B Eider Torres
Removed from 40-man roster: 2B Eider Torres
Reinstated from DL: RHP Brent Allar
Reinstated from DL: RHP Tim Spooneybarger, OF Lee Ellis

The Orioles removed Torres from the 40-man roster to make room for recent pitching acquisitions Bass and Simon. Torres was voted the top defensive second baseman in the International League in our Best Tools survey. The 25-year-old switch-hitter had a decent year with the stick, too, batting .307/.357/.381 with 28 stolen bases for Triple-A Norfolk.

Boston Red Sox
Released:
RHP Robert Romero
Recalled: RHP Michael Bowden, RHP Clay Buchholz, RHP Bartolo Colon, RHP Devern Hansack, RHP Charlie Zink, C Dusty Brown, C George Kottaras, SS Argenis Diaz, OF Chris Carter
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Bartolo Colon
Designated for assignment: RHP Marcus McBeth
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Marcus McBeth
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Jason Place
Reinstated from DL: OF Matt Sheely

Boston called up the core of its Triple-A Pawtucket team after it was bounced from the IL playoffs by Scranton. Zink and Hansack (and David Pauley) led Pawtucket in innings, while Carter batted .300/.356/.515 in 470 at-bats and was the club’s steadiest hitter this side of league MVP Jeff Bailey.

Chicago Cubs
Released:
RHP Rafael Cova
Recalled: OF Felix Pie
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Randy Wells
Reinstated from DL: RHP Ryan Acosta, RHP Al Alburquerque, RHP Justin Bristow, RHP Alberto Cabrera, RHP Rafael Dolis, RHP Jim Henderson, RHP Alessandro Maestri, RHP Jonathan Nagel, RHP Dae-Eun Rhee, LHP Jeremy Papelbon, C Danny Fatheree, 1B Matt Craig, SS Gian Guzman
Reinstated from inactive list: C Chris Robinson

Wells began the season in the big leagues because he was the Blue Jays’ major league Rule 5 pick, but he didn’t last long. In fact, he lasted just one inning, in which he walked one but retired three batters without incident. Returned to the Cubs, he went on to have a fine season for Triple-A Iowa, going 10-4, 4.02 with 102 strikeouts and 34 walks in 119 innings, to earn another shot in the big leagues.

Chicago White Sox
Added to 40-man roster:
2B Jason Bourgeois
Designated for assignment: RHP Charlie Haeger
Reinstated from DL: RHP Luis Guzman, RHP Johnnie Lowe, RHP Juan Moreno, LHP Israel Chirino, LHP Justin Edwards, LHP Ryan O’Malley, LHP Noe Rodriguez, C Billy Killian, C Donny Lucy, C Erick San Pedro, 2B Brandon Johnson, OF Jeff DaVanon, OF Anderson Gomes, OF Nick Mahin, OF Jose Martinez, OF Kenny Williams Jr.

Haeger led the minors with 178 innings, but it wasn’t enough to keep him in black and white. The Padres snagged him on waivers and figure to give him a chance in spacious Petco Park. A Rangers’ second-round pick in 2000, Bourgeois received his first big league look after nine pro seasons. The White Sox showed a commitment to him by re-signing him as a minor league free agent last offseason, and now by adding him to the 40-man. The 26-year-old Bourgeois batted .286/.335/.404 with 30 stolen bases for Triple-A Charlotte this season, playing second base and all three outfield spots. In that regard, he’s almost like a righthanded version of Chris Getz.

Cincinnati Reds
Recalled:
RHP Matt Belisle, LHP Danny Herrera, 2B Danny Richar, SS Paul Janish, 3B Adam Rosales
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Jon Adkins, RHP Josh Roenicke, LHP Adam Pettyjohn
Designated for assignment: RHP Todd Coffey
Placed on 60-day DL: RHP Matt Belisle
Reinstated from DL: RHP Matt Belisle, RHP Scott Carroll, RHP Scott Gaffney, RHP Kyle Lotzkar, RHP Ricky Rhodes, RHP Jordan Smith, RHP Pedro Villarreal, LHP Tyler Pelland, LHP Travis Webb, C Chris Kroski, C Justin Tordi, 3B Aaron Herr, OF Keltavious Jones
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Enrique Garcia, RHP Will Hudgens, RHP Randall Linebaugh, RHP Derrik Lutz, LHP Blaine Howell, LHP Joseph Krebs, LHP Alex Smit, 3B Juan Francisco, SS Yen-Wen Kuo, OF Andrew Means

Coffey did not make it through waivers. The Brewers signed him and inserted him into their flagging bullpen. Janish, Richar and Rosales comprised three-quarters of Triple-A Louisville’s infield in their abbreviated playoff run. Herrera, Roenicke, Pettyjohn and Adkins all pitched out of the Bats’ bullpen in the postseason, earning them big league callups. Interestingly, two higher-profile Louisville pitchers did not receive callups: Homer Bailey and Matt Maloney. Bailey struck out eight in six shutout innings in his only playoff start against Durham, so the Reds, perhaps, are letting him end on a high note.

Cleveland Indians
Released:
OF Corteze Armstrong
Recalled: RHP Bryan Bullington, LHP Scott Lewis
Reinstated from DL: RHP Dallas Cawiezell, RHP Santo Frias, RHP Adam Miller, RHP Alex Morales, RHP Jacob Reust, RHP Jorge Riera, RHP Gregorio Rosario, LHP Eric Berger, LHP Juan Lara, LHP Garrett Rieck, C Armando Camacaro, C Nathan Recknagel, 2B Rafael Vera, SS Jansy Infante, SS Matt Willard, OF Delvi Cid, OF Jason Denham
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Scott Roehl, RHP Bryce Stowell, C Roberto Perez, OF Tim Palincsar

Lewis stuck out three and gave up three hits in eight shutout innings in his big league debut, and didn’t issue a walk. According to baseball-reference.com, Lewis’ eight innings pitched was the fifth-most by an Indian in his big-league debut since 1956. Ron Taylor went 11 innings in 1962, followed by nine-inning complete games by Jim Kern (1974), Luis Tiant (1964) and Mudcat Grant (1958).

Colorado Rockies
Recalled:
RHP Greg Reynolds
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Shane Lindsay, RHP Ryan Mattheus, RHP Chaz Roe, RHP Casey Weathers, C Mike McKenry, 2B Eric Young Jr., SS Chris Nelson
Assigned to winter league: RHP Andy Graham, RHP Connor Graham, RHP David Patton, C Lars Davis, 3B Darin Holcomb, OF Mike Mitchell

Detroit Tigers
Recalled:
RHP Eddie Bonine, RHP Rick Porcello, RHP Virgil Vasquez, LHP Macay McBride, 2B Michael Hollimon, OF Brent Clevlen, OF Clete Thomas
Reinstated from DL: RHP Erik Crichton, RHP Luke Putkonen, LHP Charlie Furbush, LHP Zach Piccola, SS Joaquin Guzman, OF Clete Thomas
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Kelvin Cedano

Houston Astros
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Dave Borkowski, 1B Mark Saccomanno
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Chase Lehr

Houston’s 23rd-round pick in 2003 out of Baylor, Saccomano was rewarded for his fine season with Triple-A Round Rock. The 28-year-old righthanded batter hit .297/.339/.521 with 27 homers and 33 doubles for the Express, in his second straight year at Triple-A.

Kansas City Royals
Released:
RHP Steven Miller, C Todd Balduf

Los Angeles Angels
Released:
RHP Carlo Alvarado, RHP Jeff Kennard
Recalled: RHP Jason Bulger, C Bobby Wilson, 3B Matt Brown
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Kevin Jepsen, 3B Freddy Sandoval

The well-traveled Alvarado, 30, signed with the Angels last February and made 23 starts for playoff-bound Triple-A Salt Lake, going 7-5, 4.27 in 131 innings. Signed by the Pirates out of Puerto Rico in 1995, Alvarado has played independent ball (2002, 2005) and in the Mexican League (2004, 2007) in his 14-year career.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Released:
RHP Tanyon Sturtze
Recalled: RHP Mario Alvarez
Added to 40-man roster: 2B Pablo Ozuna
Reinstated from DL: RHP Mario Alvarez

Milwaukee Brewers
Designated for assignment:
C Lou Palmisano
Removed from 40-man roster: C Lou Palmisano, OF Laynce Nix
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Wily Peralta
Reinstated from DL: 3B Edgar Trejo

Minnesota Twins
Recalled:
LHP Jose Mijares

New York Yankees
Recalled:
OF Melky Cabrera
Optioned to Double-A: RHP Humberto Sanchez
Designated for assignment: RHP Scott Patterson
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Michael Gardner, 2B Nick Green
Reinstated from DL: RHP Anthony Claggett, C Ben Blumenthal, SS Addison Maruszak

The Padres claimed Patterson on waivers, and he’s already pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for his new club. The 29-year-old went 2-1, 3.80 with 54 strikeouts and 13 walks in 47 1/3 innings this season for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Undrafted out of Division II West Virginia State, Patterson spent four years in the independent Frontier League before signing with New York in 2006.

Oakland Athletics
Recalled:
RHP Jeff Gray
Added to 40-man roster: 3B Jeff Baisley
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Jose Fragoso, RHP Craig Italiano,LHP Lenny DiNardo
Reinstated from inactive list: LHP Justin Dowdy

Gray pitched at Missouri State (back when it was called Southwest Missouri State) with his current Athletics teammate, Brad Ziegler. Four members of the Bears’ 2002 staff have reached the majors with Gray joining Ziegler, Shaun Marcum and Matt Palmer. All but Palmer pitched for SMS’ 2003 College World Series squad. (John Manuel)

Philadelphia Phillies
Recalled:
RHP Joe Bisenius, RHP Andrew Carpenter, LHP Fabio Castro, C Jason Jaramillo, 2B Brad Harman, OF T.J. Bohn
Designated for assignment: LHP R.J. Swindle
Removed from 40-man roster: LHP R.J. Swindle

Pittsburgh Pirates
Recalled:
RHP Jimmy Barthmaier, RHP Ronald Belisario, RHP Yoslan Herrera, RHP John Van Benschoten, LHP Dave Davidson
Reinstated from DL: RHP Rodolfo Aguirre, RHP Maurice Bankston, RHP Patrick Bresnehan, RHP Sean Giblin, LHP Corey Hamman, C Steven Suarez, SS Angel Gonzalez

San Diego Padres
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Mike Ekstrom, OF Drew Macias
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Kellen Kulbacki

San Francisco Giants
Recalled:
OF Clay Timpner
Added to 40-man roster: 3B Conor Gillaspie
Removed from 40-man roster: OF Clay Timpner

Like the Nationals’ Ross Detwiler last season, Gillaspie, the Giants’ supplemental first-rounder in June, became the first player from his draft class to make the big leagues by virtue of receiving a September cup of coffee. Because the Giants added him to the 40-man roster well ahead of his maturation date on the farm (he hit .269/.352/.344 in 93 minor league at-bats), they have effectively given him a major league deal.

Seattle Mariners
Released:
RHP Tommy Johannesen-Ellis, RHP Doug Salinas, LHP Jose Escalona, LHP Eddy Fernandez, LHP Julio Santiago
Reinstated from DL: RHP Nathan Adcock, RHP Phillippe Aumont, RHP Brodie Downs, RHP Ruben Flores, RHP Aaron Jensen, RHP Stephen Kahn, RHP Kyle Parker, RHP Sean White, RHP Juan Zapata, LHP Donald Hume, LHP Eric O’Flaherty, C Jose Yepez, 1B Gerardo Avila, 2B Yung Chi Chen, 2B Ron Garth, 3B Leury Bonilla, OF Carlos Peguero, OF Kalian Sams, OF Michael Saunders
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Victor Duarte, RHP Ramon Romeijn, LHP Nelson Payano, LHP Fabian Williamson, C Wei Wang, OF Yu Bing Jia

Tampa Bay Rays
Added to 40-man roster:
C Michel Hernandez, 1B Dan Johnson
Designated for assignment: 3B Joel Guzman
Removed from 40-man roster: 3B Joel Guzman
Reinstated from DL: RHP Bladimir Florentino, LHP David Newmann, C Josh Johnson

Guzman held the bonus record ($2.25 million from the Dodgers) for a position player signed out of the Dominican Republic until Rafael Rodriguez ($2.55 million from the Giants) shattered it this July. But for all his raw ability, Guzman has not shown meaningful improvement in either his hitting approach or his defensive consistency in seven pro seasons. He’s played essentially three full years at Triple-A, hitting .254/.294/.431 with 51 home runs in those 1,255 at-bats. Guzman is still just 23, though, so perhaps another organization would have better luck unlocking his talent.

Toronto Blue Jays
Reinstated from DL:
C John Schneider, OF Chad Mottola
Reinstated from inactive list: OF Michael Crouse
