Rookie Dish: Morales Becoming POTD Regular

Prospect Of The Day

Elizabethton (Twins) is getting more production out of their eight-hole hitter than they probably could have expected. Center fielder Angel Morales, an 18-year-old product of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, was 2-for-4 with a run scored, double and his 10th home run of the year in defeat. In 136 at-bats, Morales is batting .331/.435/.632. This is the fourth consecutive day that a Twins prospect has earned POTD recognition, and deservedly so.

Prospect Nuggets

Kingsport (Mets) shortstop Wilmer Flores celebrated his 17th birthday in style, going 2-for-5 with one RBI and his ninth double of the year. He is on a four-game multi-hit streak . . . Jon Gilmore was 2-for-4 yesterday as Danville (Braves) lost its third consecutive game in blowout fashion . . . Righthander Julio Teheran took the loss for Danville, surrendering three hits and four earned runs while striking out four in 1 2/3 innings . . . Breaking out of a 12-at-bat hitless streak, Casey Kelly went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, playing shortstop and batting third for the GCL Red Sox . . . The GCL Marlins used catcher Kyle Skipworth’s third home run–a solo shot–of the season to upset the first-place GCL Dodgers. The No. 6 overall pick went 1-for-5 and has at least one hit in 10 of his last 11 games, but his strikeout rate is still less than desirable (33 whiffs in 108 at-bats) . . . AZL Royals righthander Tyler Sample rebounded from a few rocky starts, tossing four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and fanning five . . . Yesterday’s POTD, Elizabethton (Twins) left fielder Evan Bigley, collected two hits for the third straight game, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI . . . The Pirates added another big-leaguer to their GCL roster, as catcher Ronny Paulino homered and drove in two runs as he attempts to get his ankle back in playing shape. Jose Tabata also went 1-for-2 with an RBI and is batting .455 over four games in Rookie ball . . . AZL Padres left fielder Jaff Decker scored two runs and stole his sixth base of the season in a 1-for-3 performance . . . A poor fourth inning chased GCL Nationals lefthander Jack McGeary from the game, where he allowed all three of his earned runs to fall to 0-2 on the season . . . Having given up a football scholarship to play wide receiver at Alabama, Nationals second rounder Destin Hood is still adjusting to his full-time gig as a baseball player, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout.

What To Watch For Today

In a Gulf Coast League twin bill, the first-place GCL Phillies will play the GCL Indians, who are trailing by 5.5 games in the North division.
