The Rangers didn’t land their No. 1 target on July 2, when coveted righthander Michel Inoa signed with Oakland for $4.25 million.

But the Rangers did sign one of the better available talents available during this year’s international signing period: Dominican outfielder Esdras Abreu, who signed for $550,000.

At 6-foot-3, 185 pounds, Abreu has wiry strength and athleticism from the right side of the plate. Abreu was one of the top international prospects eligible for this year back in the beginning of the year, but international scouts say he lost a bit of his luster as the year wore on and his hit tool came into question.

The Rangers also announced 11 other international signings, eight of whom hail from Venezuela: LHP Edwin Escobar (also referred to as Vicente Escobar, whom BA already reported on July 3 as signing for $350,000), OF Teodoro Martinez (the son of former big leaguer Carlos Martinez), SS Oduber Herrera, SS Santiago Chirino, 3B Carlos Torrez (a cousin of Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera), 2B Luis Villegas, 3B Carlos Oropesa and C Oswaldo Pirela.

From the Dominican Republic, the Rangers signed 6-foot-2, 165-pound lefthander Wilmer Batista and lefthanded outfielder Hector Martinez. The Rangers also signed outfielder Francisco Lugo, a native of Hermosillo, Mexico.
