California League
Just one game was played in the Cal League yesterday, with Lancaster (Red Sox) taking on Stockton (Athletics). The JetHawks won 6-2 thanks to home runs by catcher Jon Still, shortstop Yamaico Navarro and center fielder Jason Place. Third baseman Chris Carter was 1-for-4 with a home run for the Ports. It was his 37th home run of the season.
The league returns to a full slate today and righthander Jhoulys Chacin will take the hill for Modesto (Rockies).
Carolina League
Prospect Of The Day
It was a tough choice between a couple of pitchers today, but Frederick (Orioles) righthander Brandon Erbe gets the edge. Erbe pitched seven innings and allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out nine. He improved to 10-12, 4.30 on the season.
Prospect Nuggets
Myrtle Beach (Braves) lefthander Cole Rohrbough was the other hurler considered. He pitched a seven-inning complete game, as part of a doubleheader, and allowed just two hits while striking out four. He improved to 2-1, 3.51…First baseman Brandon Snyder provided some support for Erbe, not that he needed it. Snyder was 3-for-5 with two doubbles, two runs scored and an RBI…Potomac (Nationals) right fielder Michael Burgess went deep yet again. It was his only hit of the game in two at-bats, but it was his sixth Carolina League home run…righthander Brad Lincoln’s comeback isn’t faring well with Lynchburg (Pirates). He lasted just 4 2/3 innings last night, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out four.
What To Watch For Today
The remnants of Tropical Storm Fay have reached the Carolinas, so the doubleheader that is scheduled between Kinston (Indians) and Winston-Salem (White Sox) because of last night’s rain, is looking even more bleak today.
Florida State League
Prospect Of The Day
Today’s honor will go to a player that made his professional debut in the FSL. First baseman Yonder Alonso, the Reds’ first-round pick this year, was 1-for-3 with a double and run scored for Sarasota.
Prospect Nuggets
Jupiter (Marlins) lefthander Sean West received a lot of consideration for the honor today. He went seven innings, allowing just three hits while striking out eight and improving to 6-5, 2.51…Daytona (Cubs) second baseman Tony Thomas was 2-for-5 with a run scored and his 28th double of the year…Clearwater (Phillies) left fielder Michael Taylor was 2-for-5 with his eighth home run.
What To Watch For Today
There are two doubleheaders scheduled today as Lakeland (Tigers) takes on Fort Myers (Twins) and Vero Beach (Rays) takes on Daytona.
