California League
Prospect Of The Day
Today’s award will go to Lake Elsinore (Padres) catcher Mitch Canham. Canham powered a 9-2 victory by going 3-for-5 with two home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored. He now has seven home runs on the season.
Prospect Nuggets
Bakersfield (Rangers) third baseman Johnny Whittleman was 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored…Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) righthander Jordan Walden had a Hot Sheet worthy start last week, but wasn’t quite on par this week. He lasted 5 2/3, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four. But his team rallied in the ninth to prevent him from being stuck with a loss…San Jose (Giants) righthander Kevin Pucetas added to his perfect win record. He went six innings, allowing just one run on two hits and a walk. He struck out seven and improved to 10-0, 2.47.
What To Watch For Today
San Jose has fairly formidable one-two punch, and the second one starts today. Righthander Tim Alderson is 11-3, 2.99 and will make the start against Visalia (Diamondbacks).
Carolina League
Prospect Of The Day
Though there were a couple of worthy candidates, we’ll give the honors to Salem’s (Astros) pitching staff. The Avalanche had a doubleheader against Myrtle Beach (Braves) yesterday and the pitching staff simply shut the Pelicans down in both games. Lefthander Adam Severino held Myrtle Beach to two runs on two hits and righthander Jason Dominguez finished them off with 1 1/3 innings of no-hit ball.
In the nightcap, righthander Bryan Hallberg held the Pelicans hitless and scoreless over five innings while striking out three. In relief, righthander Jordan Powell pitched two innings and allowed two hits. So, that’s two combined two-hitters in one day by the Salem pitching staff. Not bad.
Prospect Nuggets
Frederick (Orioles) first baseman Brandon Snyder was 2-for-5 with his 12th home run of the season…Potomac (Nationals) right fielder Michael Burgess was impressive in his first day in high Class A, but was even better in his second day. He went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs…Lynchburg lefthander Daniel Moskos pitched in relief again, this time tossing two innings and allowing one run on two hits. He walked one and struck out two.
What To Watch For Today
Potomac will run lefthander Ross Detwiler (6-8, 5.16) out to the mound against Frederick in their series finale.
Florida State League
Prospect Of The Day
Tampa (Yankees) righthander Zach McAllister turned another outstanding start yesterday. He threw five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and one walk. He struck out five and improved to 7-6, 2.03.
Prospect Nuggets
Clearwater (Phillies) left fielder Michael Taylor was 2-for-4 with his fourth FSL home run…Lakeland (Tigers) righthander Rick Porcello got his record above .500 after going five innings and allowing just one run on six hits and two walks. He struck out two and is now 7-6, 2.80…Fort Myers (Twins) righthander Carlos Gutierrez came on in relief in the sixth inning, but allowed two runs on three hits over 1 1/3 to get stuck with the loss, the first of his young career.
What To Watch For Today
Daytona (Cubs) and Jupiter (Marlins) were rained out last night and will have to separate themselves in other games as new series start today. The two teams are still tied for first in the FSL East standings.
