The Brewers promoted third baseman Mat Gamel from Double-A Huntsville to Triple-A Nashville. Gamel, 23, was having one of the best seasons at the plate of any prospect in the minors, batting .329/.395/.537 in 127 games with the Stars.
Gamel is the second of Huntsville’s big bats to leave the Stars, who lead the Southern League in runs; right fielder Matt LaPorta was traded to the Indians before the July 31 trading deadline. The Stars still boast plenty of firepower, as catcher Angel Salome, shortstop Alcides Escobar and center fielder Michael Brantley all rank among the top six in the SL in batting average and left fielder Cole Gillespie is tied for third in extra-base hits.
