AAA Dish: Todd Shines In Debut

PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

Like Clayton Mortensen before him, Memphis righthander Jess Todd (Cardinals) has jumped from the 2007 draft to Triple-A in less than a year. In making his first PCL start yesterday, the 22-year-old righthander struck out six Round Rock batters and walked only one in the Redbirds’ slim 2-1 victory. Ten of the 14 outs recorded on balls in play were of the groundball variety. A second-round pick out of Arkansas last year, Todd gave up one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings. He went 4-5, 2.97 for Double-A Springfield, with 81 strikeouts and 24 walks in 103 innings, to earn the promotion.

Prospect Nuggets

Tacoma 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (Mariners) went 1-for-5 with a solo home run (11), three walks and two strikeouts against Las Vegas. The Rainiers notched a 14-inning victory by a score of 6-5, with the game being the longest of the season for Tacomaat four hours and 48 minutes . . . Salt Lake Brandon Wood (Angels) went 1-for-2 with three walks and a strikeout—and who can blame Sacramento pitchers for working around him with the way he’s been swinging the bat? . . . Right fielder Justin Upton (Diamondbacks) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in his third rehab game for Tucson. It’s actually the 20-year-old’s first exposure to Triple-A, as he skipped over the level on his way to the big leagues last season.

What To Watch For Today

New Orleans LHP Jon Niese (Mets) has gone 3-0, 2.37 since his promotion to Triple-A, with 14 strikeouts and five walks in 19 innings. He makes start No. 4 tonight at Iowa.

INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

Louisville center fielder Drew Stubbs (Reds) made his Triple-A debut a game to remember with a solo home run and double in four at-bats. The 23-year-old righthanded batter drove in two runs—including the (temporary) go-ahead run via the homer in the seventh—in the Bats’ 6-4, 12-inning win at Toledo. The eighth overall pick from Texas in 2006, Stubbs was promoted from Double-A Chattanooga on Tuesday after batting .315/.400/.402 in 92 at-bats for the Lookouts.

Prospect Nuggets

Durham LHP David Price (Rays) threw 80 pitches in four innings of his Triple-A debut. He struck out six batters—including five of six lefty batters he faced—and walked none. He took the loss, though, as he gave up three runs on seven hits . . . Louisville RHP Homer Bailey’s (Reds) nightmare season continued last night as he failed to hold leads of 3-0 and 4-3, the latter courtesy of Drew Stubbs’ homer. In all, the 22-year-old surrendered four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked three. Bailey was making his first Triple-A start since July 7, but he’s gone a miserable 0-6, 7.93 in eight big league starts this season . . . Twenty-year-old hitting sensation Travis Snider (Blue Jays) went 2-for-4 as Syracuse’s left fielder.

What To Watch For Today

Though Syracuse LHP Ricky Romero (Blue Jays) has walked 11 batters in 17 innings, he also has struck out 17. He’s 1-1, 2.12 through three starts, and he’ll take No. 4 tonight when the Chiefs host Pawtucket.
