AA Dish: Wallace Wins It With HR

There are prospects in every Double-A league with some helium, but Brett Wallace stole the show yesterday with two home runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth.

TEXAS LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

Brett Wallace (Cardinals) has just 46 games of professional experience after being a first-round draft pick in June, but he’s already ascended to Double-A Springfield. The Cardinals look smart for pushing him so quickly. After hitting .327/.418/.490 in 41 games with low Class A Quad Cities in the Midwest League, Wallace skipped over high Class A Springfield to join Springfield. Yesterday in his fifth game with Springfield, Wallace went 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs, including the game-winner in a 5-5 game in the bottom of the ninth. Wallace has a hit in all five of his Double-A games so far, going 9-for-20 with two home runs, three doubles and three hit-by-pitches.

Prospect Nuggets

Looking for a Texas League prospect with some helium? Springfield outfielder Daryl Jones destroyed the high Class A Florida State League and is now doing the same to TL pitchers. Jones, 21, went 3-for-5 with a home run out of the leadoff slot yesterday, bringing his Double-A line to .338/.467/.583 in 28 games … Frisco shortstop Elvis Andrus turns 20 tomorrow, but he’s making the most of his teenage years. Yesterday he went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a steal, his 50th of the year. Thanks to an excellent second half, Andrus is batting .295/.350.374 in 110 games this season … On the mound for Frisco, righthander Neftali Feliz allowed two runs in five innings, walked two and struck out three … Northwest Arkansas righthander Dan Cortes (Royals) struck out four and limited Tulsa to one run in six innings, though he did walk four … For Tulsa, righthander Chaz Roe (Rockie) struck out seven in seven innings, holding the Naturals to two runs. Roe walked two and allowed seven hits.

What To Watch For Today

In Corpus Christi, Hooks righthander Bud Norris (Astros) squares off against San Antonio righty Stephen Faris (Padres) … Righthander James Simmons (Athletics) pitches at home tonight against Frisco … Northwest Arkansas righty Blake Wood visits Tulsa.

EASTERN LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

Looking for a prospect with helium? Casper Wells is separating himself in a thin Tigers farm system. The Erie center fielder went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double yesterday, bringing his Double-A stats to .296/.386/.604 in 68 games. Wells began the season with low Class A West Michigan in the pitcher-friendly Midwest League, where he hit .240/.351/.447 in 50 games; not overwhelming numbers on the surface for a 23-year-old, but the power was there and he was drawing walks. Now in a more age-appropriate league, Wells has been one of the EL’s best performers. A 14th-round pick in 2005, Wells also went 2-for-4 with a home run on Saturday.

Prospect Nuggets

Matt Wieters (Orioles) started the year in high Class A, but you could form a pretty good argument that if he were in the big leagues tomorrow, he would immediately be one of the best backstops in the majors. Yesterday the Bowie catcher went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and a walk … Trenton second baseman Reggie Corona (Yankees) didn’t start the game, but he came in and went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs. The 21-year-old from Venezuela is hitting .262/.340/.350 in 122 games with 51 walks and 76 strikeouts. He’s shown efficiency on the basepaths as well, stealing 24 bags in 27 attempts (89 percent) … Akron third baseman Wes Hodges (Indians) has struggled since the all-star break, hitting .214/.261/.393 in 140 at-bats. Yesterday Hodges got on the right track, going 2-for-4 with a homer and a double.

What To Watch For Today

Only two games are on tonight’s EL slate: New Britain (Twins) at Portland (Red Sox) and Connecticut (Giants) at Reading (Phillies).

SOUTHERN LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

Looking for an SL prospect with some helium? Chattanooga left fielder Danny Dorn (Reds) was a 32nd-round pick out of Cal State Fullerton in 2006 who signed for $1,000. He ranked as the No. 28 prospect in the Reds system entering the season, but his stock has climbed as he’s batted .292/.380/.567 in 93 games with the Lookouts. Dorn, 24, went 3-for-4 yesterday with a home run, his 22nd home run on the season. Dorn now has a seven-game hitting streak, with multiple hits in all seven games and four home runs in that stretch.

Prospect Nuggets

Birmingham lefthander Aaron Poreda (White Sox) might find himself in the big leagues for a September callup soon. Yesterday Poreda limited Jacksonville to one run in five innings, allowing four hits and no walks with five strikeouts … West Tenn center fielder Greg Halman (Mariners) went 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk. Plate discipline continues to be an issue for Halman, but his power (30 home runs) and speed (31 steals in 38 attempts) are an intriguing combination … Carolina first baseman Gaby Sanchez (Marlins) slapped two doubles, giving him 41 on the year, in a 2-for-4 game. Teammate Chris Coghlan normally plays second base, but he spent some time at third base yesterday. Nothing changed at the plate for the supremely disciplined Coghlan, who drew three walks in four plate appearances.

What To Watch For Today

Righthander Tommy Hanson (Braves) pitches for Mississippi at home against Mobile (Diamondbacks).
