SOUTHERN LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
Righthander Kris Medlen (Braves) helped Mississippi clinch the second-half title in the SL’s South Division with a victory yesterday at home over visiting Mobile (DIamondbacks). Medlen struck out eight and allowed one run in six innings, walked one and gave up five hits. In 120 1/3 innings, Medlen has a 3.52 ERA with 120 strikeouts and 27 walks.
Prospect Nuggets
There are still some questions about his receiving skills, but West Tenn catcher Adam Moore’s (Mariners) season at the plate has been oustanding. The 24-year-old boosted his slash stats to .316/.394/.505 in 116 games yesterday by going 2-for-3 with a double and a homer, his 14th of the season … Jacksonville shortstop Ivan De Jesus (Dodgers) went 3-for-5 and hit a home run, his sixth of the year … Huntsville catcher Angel Salome (Brewers) went 2-for-3 and homered off Carolina righy Brett Sinkbeil (Marlins) … Huntsville righthander Alex Periard (Brewers) has solid stuff, though the 21-year-old is having an adjustment period getting used to Double-A. Yesterday Periard was excellent, throwing six shutout innings with two hits, no walks and five strikeouts against Carolina.
What To Watch For Today
Righthander Todd Redmond starts tonight for Mississippi at home against West Tenn.
EASTERN LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
For a player whose age would make him one of the youngest players in low Class A, Fernando Martinez’s (Mets) Double-A line of .286/.337/.422 is certainly palatable. Martinez, 19, went 3-for-5 yesterday and hit his fourth triple for Binghamton.
Prospect Nuggets
Reading shortstop Jason Donald (Phillies) has returned from Team USA, although it wasn’t the most pleasant of returns; Donald went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts … Scouts talk more about Drew Butera’s (Twins) defense than his offense, which isn’t surprising given that the New Britain catcher has caught 50 percent of the 52 runners who have attempted to steal against him this year. Yesterday Butera stood out in the batter’s box, going 3-for-4 with his seventh home run. Butera, who turned 25 this month, is hitting .222/.307/.358 in 93 games.
What To Watch For Today
Trenton (Yankees) is at Bowie (Orioles) for a matchup of the teams with the two best records in the EL.
TEXAS LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
San Antonio first baseman Kyle Blanks (Padres) is officially playing at ludicrous speed. Yesterday Blanks went a clean 4-for-4, walked and hit a double, his fourth straight game with at least two hits and his second game in that stretch with at least four hits. Blanks, 21, is now batting .326/.404/.510 in 127 games.
Prospect Nuggets
Frisco shortstop Elvis Andrus (Rangers) extended his hitting streak to 14 games by going 1-for-5 … Corpus Christi center fielder Brian Bogusevic (Astros) went 2-for-5 and cracked his eighth double … Tulsa center fielder Dexter Fowler (Rockies) returned to the TL from Team USA and went 1-for-3 with a double, while shortstop Chris Nelson went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an error, his 24th … Northwest Arkansas righthander Julio Pimentel (Royals) has mixed some very good starts with some poor outings this year. File yesterday’s in the good bucket: 7 1/3 shutout innings, five hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
What To Watch For Today
Our list of pitching probables suggests that Midland lefthander Brett Anderson (Athletics) is set to return from Team USA to make his first start back in the TL.
