The Texas League was off yesterday, but JP Arencibia, Travis Snider and Cameron Maybin provided firepower in the two other Double-A leagues yesterday.

EASTERN LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

At some point, J.P. Arencibia’s (Blue Jays) lack of plate discipline is going to catch up to him. An .851 OPS with two walks in 43 games just isn’t sustainable, but so far it’s worked for the New Hampshire catcher. Yesterday Arencibia went 2-for-4 and hit a home run, his 11th with the Fisher Cats after hitting 13 for high Class A Dunedin. That raised Arencibia’s Double-A averages to .298/.307/.544, a line that sums up Arencibia’s skill set quite nicely.

Prospect Nuggets

Hitting behind Snider in the Fisher Cats lineup, right fielder Travis Snider went 2-for-4 with a double, putting his numbers at  .262/.357/.461 in 362 Double-A at-bats … Altoona second baseman Shelby Ford had a three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a triple and a double … He’s not a prospect any more, but Harrisburg righthander Bobbie Brownlie had a great line: eight strikeouts and one walk in five innings, but he allowed five runs and six hits, four of which were home runs.

Prospect Of The Day

At 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, Carolina center fielder Cameron Maybin still has plenty of room to add strength and power. The scary thing is, Maybin already generates significant power at age 21 with his lightning bat speed when he launches a ball in the air, though his swing has been more conducive to keeping the ball on the ground. Yesterday Maybin went 3-for-5 with a home run, his 13th of the season, putting him at .273/.368/.466 in 326 at-bats.

Prospect Nuggets

Chattanooga center fielder Drew Stubbs (Reds) has had a hard time adjusting to breaking pitches, but he has plenty of raw ability. With is raw power and speed are both excellent, so when Stubbs does put the ball in play, good things tend to happen, as was the case yesterday in Birmingham. Stubbs went  3-for-6 with a pair of doubles, raising his slash stats to .272/.372/.404 in 379 at-bats between Chattanooga and high Class A Sarasota … Huntsville’s Alcides Escobar (Brewers) just might be the best defensive shortstop prospect in the minor leagues, but he’s also making quite an impact at the plate this year. Yesterday Escobar went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, setting him at .335/.369/.444 in 357 at-bats.

Stubbs will try to stay on track today when Chattanooga hosts Tennessee (Cubs).
