TEXAS LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
Daryl Jones didn’t make the Cardinals Top 30 prospects list entering the season, but he figures to rank prominently at the conclusion of the season. Jones, 21, began the season with high Class A Palm Beach and hit .320/.399/.463 in 300 at-bats before his promotion to Double-A Springfield. Success has continued in the Texas League for Jones, who went 2-for-4 with a home run yesterday to bring his Double-A batting line to .294/.478/.515 in 22 games.
Prospect Nuggets
Lefthander Derek Holland’s (Rangers) ascent in prospect status continued yesterday. The Frisco righthander allowed just one run and three hits in six innings yesterday, walking one and striking out seven. Holland, 21, began the year in the low Class A Midwest League before promotions to high Class A and Double-A. Between the three levels, Holland has a composite 2.40 ERA in 138 2/3 innings with 145 strikeouts and 36 walks … Tulsa shortstop Chris Nelson (Rockies) with a double, a walk and a stolen base … Left fielder Chad Huffman had a another big night for San Antonio, as the 24-year-old went 3-for-5 and clocked his 30th double.
What To Watch For Today
Righthander Dan Cortes (Royals) starts tonight for Northwest Arkansas.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
Prospect Nuggets
Welington Castillo (Cubs) has had a curious season. In 33 games with high Class A Daytona, the 21-year-old catcher hit .273/.299/.339. In 50 games with Double-A Tennessee, Castillo is batting .297/.359/.429. It’s all still small sample, but it’s an encouraging sign that Castillo has been able to find success in the Southern League, including last night when he went 5-for-6 with a double … Jacksonville shortstop Ivan DeJesus (Dodgers) went 4-for-5 with four singles and stole his 14th base of the season … Huntsville third baseman Mat Gamel (Brewers) went 2-for-4 and hit his 19th home run, while DH Angel Salome chipped in a pair of singles and a walk in four plate appearances. On the mound for the Stars, righthander Jeremy Jeffress struck out four in six shutout innings, though he also issued four walks … West Tenn catcher Adam Moore (Mariners) hit his 14th home run in 1-for-3 night.
What To Watch For Today
Lefthander Aaron Poreda (White Sox) pitches at home tonight for Birmingham against Huntsville.
EASTERN LEAGUE
The only action in the EL last night was the Reading-Trenton game, which did feature a pair of toolsy center fielders. Reading’s Greg Golson (Phillies) went 0-for-4, while Trenton’s Austin Jackson (Yankees) went 1-for-4 with a walk.
