Short-Season Dish: Brenly On Fire In Northwest League

Prospect Of The Day

The son of Cubs’ broadcaster Bob Brenly is on quite a run with Boise. Catcher/first baseman Michael Brenly (Cubs) was just a 36th round pick this summer, but he is .383/.471/.483 after a 2-for-3 day yesterday in which he also stole his first base of the season. Brenly is hitting .539 with four doubles over his last 10 games.

Prospect Nuggets

At age 25, Brian Baisley (Yankees) is older than nearly all of his peers in the New York-Penn League, but his game yesterday is still noteworthy. Baisley went 2-for-4 with a home run and a triple and had six RBIs. . . Anthony Shawler (Tigers) pitched four innings in relief for Oneonta. He allowed no runs on four hits, walked one and struck out six to lower his ERA to 1.08. . . Dennis Raben (Mariners) might be getting back on track after his freefall. The Everett rightfielder went 2-for-3 with a double on Sunday after hitting his second home run of the season on Friday. . . Wilfredo Boscan (Rangers) is having trouble finding the win column after winning his first six games, but he is still pitching some very good ball. Boscan’s Sunday line looked much like those first six appearances, allowing one run on four hits in five innings. The righthander walked one and struck out seven. Don’t forget, this Venezuelan is just 18 years old.

What To Watch For Today

Chris Carpenter (Cubs) takes the mound for Boise today. The righthander out of Kent State will make his second start for the Hawks against Salem-Keizer’s Wilber Bucardo (Giants).
