Miguel Mendez (Pirates) is a 20-year-old catcher from the Dominican Republic who has owned the Gulf Coast League. In 47 at-bats, Mendez has five home runs and 12 RBIs to compliment a line of .447/.526/.809. Mendez went 3-for-3 with a double and a home run yesterday.
Alfonso Soriano (Cubs) joined the Arizona League on a rehabilitation assignment and went 0-for-2 as the designated hitter. . . Lastings Milledge (Nationals) hit a solo home run in three at-bats on his rehabilitation assignment in the Gulf Coast league. He played center field. . . Casey Kelly (Red Sox) went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and is now 0-for-his-first-11 in the Gulf Coast League. . . Mendez’s teammate, Jarek Cunningham (Pirates) has not been far behind Mendez. Cunningham, an 18-year-old prospect went 3-for-7 in two games with a double and a home run. He is hitting .415/.480/.738 in 19 games with seven doubles, four home runs and 11 RBIs. . . Orem lefthander Jayson Miller (Angels) allowed one earned run on five hits in six innings and suffered his first loss of the season. His ERA is still at 0.94 in 38 1/3 innings. . . Rangers righthander Joe Wieland, a fourth round draft pick, tossed three shutout innings in the Arizona League. . . Josh Smoker (Nationals) was not getting it done for Hagerstown in the South Atlantic League, so he has joined the Nationals’ Gulf Coast team. The 2007 supplemental first-rounder threw 3 2/3 shutout innings. He allowed three hits, walked three and struck out two. . . Greeneville third baseman Ebert Rosario (Astros) has been eating up Appalachian League pitching. After going 3-for-5 with a double and a triple yesterday, Rosario is hitting .403/.442/.597 in 22 games.
What To Watch For Today
Greenville’s 17-year-old lefthander Luis Cruz (Astros) takes the mound in the Appalachian League. He faces Princeton for a 7:00 PM start time.
