Low A Dish: Stanton Clubs No. 24

Mike Stanton added to his SAL home run lead, Pete Kozma came through with some late inning heroics and Mike McCardell and Edward Paredes engaged in an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Greensboro (Marlins) center fielder Mike Stanton doubled, homered and drove in three in an 8-1 win over Hagerstown (Nationals). He went 2-for-4 on the night. The home run was Stanton’s 24th of the season, extending his league lead to five over his nearest competition. Although Stanton plays in a very hitter-friendly ballpark, his lead can’t just be chalked up to his friendly confines, as 11 of his 24 long balls have come on the road.

Prospect Nuggets

Rome (Braves) first baseman Freddie Freeman went 2-for-3 and clubbed his 17th home run in a 3-0 win over Augusta (Giants) … Hickory (Pirates) righthander Duke Welker pitched six shutout innings against Charleston (Yankees). Welker allowed just two hits–both singles–three walks and struck out six. He also induced 10 groundouts and only three fly outs. The win was just his third of the year as he improved to 3-8, 4.34.

What To Watch For Today

Savannah (Mets) sends righthander Scott Moviel (9-7, 4.53) to the mound against Asheville (Rockies) at 7:00 EDT … Kannapolis (White Sox) and Lakewood (Phillies) will play a doubleheader starting at 6:05 EDT.

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

Quad Cities (Cardinals) shortstop Pete Kozma hit a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth to finish off a 3-for-4 night against Great Lakes (Dodgers). With Quad Cities down 2-1, Kozma led off the ninth by going deep off Loons righthander Miguel Ramirez. The shot was his fourth of the season and propelled the River Bandits to a come-from-behind 5-2 win. Kozma is currently riding a 13-game hitting-streak, raising his line to .283/.359/.394 in 353 at-bats.

Prospect Nuggets

Kozma’s heroics spoiled a great outing by Great Lakes starter Justin Miller. The righthander struck out eight over six innings while allwoing only one run on four hits … Beloit (Twins) righthander Mike McCardell threw seven shutout innings against Wisconsin (Mariners). He allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out seven … Matching McCardell was Wisconsin lefthander Edward Paredes, who also went seven and allowed only one run on five hits while fanning eight … Dayton (Reds) catcher Devin Mesoraco hit his seventh home run of the year as part of a 2-for-4 evening against Kane County (Athletics).

What To Watch For Today

South Bend (Diamondbacks), which leads the MWL East by three games, will host Burlington (Royals), which is only a half game out in the West, in the rubber match of a three-game series tonight at 7:00 EDT.
