Prospect Of The Day
Not much of a contest for today’s honors. Asheville (Rockies) righthander Bruce Billings threw the SAL’s first no-hitter since 2005 in a 10-0 rout over Lakewood (Phillies). After issuing a two-out walk in the top of the first, Billings retired the next 23 hitters in a row before committing a fielding error himself that allowed a man to reach with one out in the ninth. Billings struck out eight and completed the game on 112 pitches.
“The third inning was really when I noticed I hadn’t given up a hit, but I tried my best not to think about it," Billings told the Asheville Citizen-Times. "The run support I got was awesome. I haven’t had too many starts where I got that kind of run support, so I just tried to make the most of it.”
Billings, 22, was drafted as a senior out of San Diego State in the 30th round last year. This was the first time he had pitched deeper than the seventh inning all year, and he improved to 8-7, 3.73 in 118 innings.
Prospect Nuggets
Rome (Braves) left fielder Cody Johnson went 3-for-5 with a double and a stolen base in a 12-10 loss to West Virginia (Brewers). Johnson’s strikeouts have picked up again, as he’s fanned 33 times in 77 at-bats in July, but he’s still hitting better than he has in any other month, putting up a line of .286/.317/.494 … Jason Heyward served as the Braves’ DH and went 2-for-5 with a triple, his fourth of the season … Charleston (Yankees) catcher Jesus Montero didn’t start the RiverDogs’ game in Greensboro (Marlins), but he came off the bench in the ninth and delivered a game-winning pinch-hit RBI single as the RiverDogs avoided a sweep with a 4-3 win.
What To Watch For Today
The SAL has Thursday off.
Midwest League
Prospect Of The Day
Burlington (Royals) third baseman Mike Moustakas went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in a 6-4 win over Cedar Rapids. Moustakas hasn’t missed a beat since coming back from a strained oblique that hampered him earlier in the month. He’s eight for his last 17, raising his line to .252/.312/.413 in 349 at-bats.
Prospect Nuggets
Burlington righthander Matt Mitchell picked up his first win since June 20 after going five innings and giving up one run (unearned) on four hits. He struck out three and walked one, improving to 6-8, 3.93 on the year … Kane County (Athletics) second baseman Jemile Weeks extended his hitting streak to eight games after a 2-for-4 effort against Fort Wayne (Padres) … Clinton (Rangers) righthander Blake Beavan gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits over five innings against Great Lakes (Dodgers). He walked three, struck out one and took a no decision.
What To Watch For Today
Cedar Rapids will send lefthander Trevor Reckling (7-3, 2.79) to the hill against Burlington at 8:00 EDT.
